Bullet performance
« on: December 09, 2003, 06:11:19 PM »
I wonder about bullet performance. I will use the .358 Winchester for an example, since that is what I have been shooting the most.

The bullet I am shooting has a very large meplate. My velocity runs around 2100 at the time, with the load I am shooting.

I'm sure there is some expansion on game with the bullet at closer ranges, but I wonder when the flat point comes into play as the main killer.  By that I mean, at what velocity does it drop to before it is no longer giving a good wound channel?

In my book, Jacketed Performance with Cast Bullets I have a chapter which will answer your question fully, with a formula which calculates the wound diameter created by a flat nose at a given speed.

To be sure of maximum effective range, using my formula, which gives a relitive number to the 'displacement velocity' of tissue spray, which causes the wound by any bullet, if the wound is larger than the bullet.

I cannot do justice the the topic in this forum.  You'll have to read my book, which you'll find listed in my catalog.
