So who's your favorite western actor?
« on: December 09, 2003, 07:42:34 PM »
Yes.. that time of year.  Making lists and all that good stuff.

So who is your favorite?  Sure, give a couple if you want.  Heck, even throw in the ones you hate or would rather ignore.  Just grin while you post.

I'm guessing you mean actors after John, Clint and Tom   :)
I've always wished Morgan Freeman would have done more westerns, I think his screen "tough guy" presence would have worked well.
While I have "Tombstone" on vhs and dvd, and is one of my all-time favorites, I hate Curt Russell, even if he did do a good job in the movie.

Since this post is for movie fans, I'd like to ask a quick question.  There was a movie this past fall, Land's End or something that I missed, I think it was a Kevin Kostner film, any one know when it might be released on dvd?

First and foremost, I always have been and always will be a die hard John Wayne fan.  When someone mentions the word western, I think John Wayne.  After JW, I would be hard pressed to name a good follow up. I have always enjoyed Jack Elam, both villianous and humorous.  I also loved Lee Van Cleef in "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly".  More modern westerns like Silverado and the recent Open Range are more ensemble pieces to me.  I can't pin point one person in Silverado that stands out as the star, but can't imagine anyone else in any of the roles.  I may be drummed out of  Graybeards, but I have never seen Lonesome Dove, I always plan too, but something comes up.  I really intend on watching it over the Christmas Vacation.  It came out when I was working 60+ hours a week on a midnight shift.  I did that for five years, since my timeing on catching it stinks.  I have to hit the video store.

Couple more to consider....

Don't forget Tom Berenger in "The Rough Riders."  Was at the end of the Cowboy era and I thought he was Teddy.  Had to watch it twice to follow the story as I was watching Tom be Teddy and missed some of the story line.

Wife loves Sam Elliott in anything he does (Lonesome Dove, RR, etc)

Being old enough to remember some genuine "westerners" and cowmen who were born in the 1800's, I think Robert Duval has been able to convincingly portray their mannerisms (hand movements, facial expressions, vernacular) better than most other contemporary actors.  From my perspective, he is probably the most believable of them all.  I'd place Tom Sellek almost at the same level in that regard.

Howdy all,

Glad to see the responses.
As an ACTOR, I think Duvall is the best.  He molds himself to each role and can convincingly play parts other than western.

Selleck is great in his current roles and I appreciate the way he goes to bat for authenticity on his films.  Still, he, like the Duke plays himself most of the times.

Oh, and like Howdy, I wish I had more folks to pick from in the movies.  Still, it's better now than it was 5 years ago.

Wal now lets see what we got here.
Tha Duke-could only pay himself. Well hisonself was pure western. Pure mans man.
Tom- Hard to figure this'un, but i'm bettin tha same mold. He's not much on hisownself. Seems ta go his on way. Take him or leave him.
Bobby Duval- If'n ya could say the only actor in tha bunch i'm guessin ya would name him. Man can make ya believe he is who he is playing-in anything.
Clint- Like tha Duke his big play is not sayin much, a lot.
Cosner- Three westerns, Three characters, Three good performances-Jest doan let him direct anythin, he can make a career outta one movie.
Then there is smiley.
Why not Ward Bond- He could almost out Duke tha Duke. Talk about side kicks in a lotta movies.
Doan fergit Gabby.
or chill wills.
What ever happened to Randolf Scott. Pure westerner.

John Wayne was not only the best western actor, but was the untimate American patriot.  It was hard to separate them.  He played himself.  But what about Clayton Moore?  Maybe not the best actor, but I rushed home every afternoon from school to see him beat the bad guys!  I ate, slept, and breathed "Lone Ranger"!  I saw that his guns were up for sale last year, last bid I saw was $15000.  I tried to get my wife to hock her car, but she resisted-a foolish, shortsighted move.  I can see myself now, showing up at a match, shooting the originals.  Probably would not go home.  After the match, I would probably be riding a stick horse into the sunset.  Nowdays, I will see every Tom Selleck western I can find.  44 Man

I'd forgotton Chief Dan George!  He was great in that Clint Eastwood movie (don't remember which one) as Clint's unappreciated buddy, but he was great.  Amen on Open Range, I'll own a copy as soon as it comes out.  Put it right next to Crossfire Trail.  Who was the little guy that was the livery keeper?  He's been around forever also.

Bein' kinda old, wore out, and on the verge of obsolescence my own self, I really enjoyed Richard Farnsworth's later performances.  Found him to be very believable in each of his roles.

I've seen an awful lot of very famous cowboys mentioned here that were on the big screen, but I think  we missed a Big Hero from the 40's and 50's.......... He always rode a white horse, wore a big white hat, fought like ten men, carried two six guns, shot straight from the hip, and sang a good song.  His son, the actor/comedian, just passed away a few months ago..........................
How 'bout it Howdy.......do we have any guesses?
