Coyotes with non fur saver bullets with pics
« on: November 11, 2010, 05:17:43 PM »
Coyotes were chasing deer opening weekend.  Monday I couldn't take it anymore.  4 came by fast and I wasn't ready.  They came back again and were at about 125 yards and I shot the 3rd one coming back by and dropped him.  Should have shot the 4th as it ran by but didn't pull the trigger.  About 15 seconds later I look out and see what I thought was another dog that came to see what happened to his buddy and I whacked him.  Turns out it was the same dog in the picture and I shot him twice ;D  How he got up from that first hit I don't know.  About 1-2 minutes later another dog was running across the field about 250 yards in front of me, I shot and it disappeared.  Lost it in the recoil.  Happy days I got that one too ;D

Bullets were 250 grain Sierra Game Kings out of a 338 win mag behind 68 grains of imr 4350 at approximately 2700 fps.  Used the same combo on one of my deer too ;D

So much for predators only chasing the weak and sick animals.  My hunting buddies also saw coyotes chasing deer that weekend.

Does a 338 Win-Mag do the same thing to your deer?

I hope those deer would be at least 300 yards away.

No kidding, I shot at a grouse once with a 338 Mag. I don't recall what bullet. I aimed for the head but hit a little low. All I found left was 1/2 of a fully cleaned breast.

Dee,

I actually shot a medium sized button buck too at 60 yards and it was quartering away going right to left.  He was hit behind the last rib went through the middle of the deer, cut 1/3 of the heart off and the bullet pieces in the picture weighed 173 grains down from the 250 grains it started at.  They were found under the off side shoulders skin after breaking the bone.  This deer left no blood trail and ran about 50 yards and hopped over a small fence!  ???

The other doe I shot was with a 45 70 contender handgun at 70 yards facing directly at me.  Been waiting for that shot for a while ;)  Factory federal cartridge with a 300 grain bullet.  Hit her square in the chest, bullet traveled all the way through her and her back leg leaving only the jacket stuck to the front side of the back leg.  She barely got turned around and dropped.  2 deer, 2 coyotes :D  Good friends :D  It was a great hunt!  Just got done packing both deer in the freezer ;)

Wishing you all a successful and very safe hunting season,

The .338 is way to big for deer, but I can see why you carry it if there are coyotes in the area.  ;) I`ve seen coyotes so shot up there is no way a fur buyer would touch them still running.

So the old 45-70 drops them faster then a 338 Mag who would have "thunked" that. :D

My son dropped two deer in there tracks 2 years ago with that 338 using 160 grain barnes x bullets.  The spray behind the deer was impressive!  Bullets traveling around 3300 fps pushed by 70 grains of varget.  One was at 156 yards and the other at 256 yards using a range finder.  Don't know what makes some of them drop and some of them run 50+ yards.  Each critter is different.

I shot another doe with that 45 70 contender last year at 100 yards and she ran about 70 yards across the field with a perfect double lung hit.   ???

Who would have thought that first coyote would have taken a second shot ???

One of the mysteries of hunting. Some drop right there and the next with a similar hit run for some distance. Makes it interesting.

In my  expierence the smaller cal high velocity bullets have done better with chest shots for instant kills. I love my 30-06 and 45-70 but did get a 6.5x55 recently.

If you prefer evening hunts as I do and have the room and inclination it would be a good reason to have a dog with the right instinct.
Makes tracking in the dark a whole different thing. ;)

.243 75gr Hornady hollow point at 125 yards. Coyote facing me. Shot dead center of his chest....exited below his privates. Pretty much everything....heart,lungs,guts,etc., fell out of him.

Take care,Stan

Good thing about the .243 is that you could have added another 275 yds and still had power to spare. My .22-250 in comparison, has slowed down to a velocity comparable to my .22 mag at the muzzle upon reaching the 400 yd mark.

I like that, double the bullet weight and you double the energy--double the velocity and you quadruple the energy. This often means instant lights out and works so well that I have been tempted to shoot one through the big middle sometime just to see what would happen ;) keep in mind that I am shooting within the shorter calling ranges but dont really like to see them get inside of 100yds using that centerfire.
