Itching for a Contender
« on: November 12, 2010, 08:02:27 AM »
I have an itch for a contender in 41 mag. If I can't find one for sale as a package and I go with buying one on one of the online auction sites to get barrel and frame together for the purpose of selling the barrel after the fact then use the funds to help purchase a 41 mag barrel. Which caliber barrel will resell the quickest? My reason for this is because I have a 41 mag Ruger Blackhawk already so I'm set up to reload this caliber already. Thanks, Charlie

From what I have seen here either common calibers like 22 LR, 22 Mag, 223, 44 mag 45-70 and 30-30 sell quickly in the 10-14"
as well a the popular odd ball stuff. 375 JDJ, 7mm TCU. 22 Hornet or an ackley version of 30-30 or 7-30
Personally I think your best bet is to either order a new one the way you want or give your self a list of other candidates you would want like 22LR, 223, or 30-30 and  find one of them and then look to buy the barrel you want either through the classifieds here ( I have found 5 here that I wanted at good prices)  And if you no longer want the one that came with the frame it would be best to sell it and then buy the one you want rather than trying to trade.  I see the trades as taking a whole lot longer than the buy and sell.  but you may want to try that route first.

Don't get one with a .223 barrel as you will end up keeping it.

Don't forget to check out Ed's Contenders. That is where my 41 mag barrel came from. $35 cheaper than i could find one any where else. He is kind of hard to get ahold of but once you do he is a great guy to deal with.

+1 on the call Ed's idea....another +1 on the 41Mag....a great choice in either Contender or Blackhawk.  I had both 10" and 14".  Between the two I'd probably pick the 10".  With the 14", the recoil would be a little more like the Blackhawk than the 10"...but not a whole lot of difference.  On buying a Contender then the 41 barrel....I'd go for a 22lr in the same barrel length that you intend to get the 41...lots of cheap practice and just good shootin' fun!!!  Go for it!
BTW The itch just gets worse the farther you go, trust me ;)

Another recommendation for Ed.  Howerver for a frame I would recommend trying Bullberry or Ebco.  I bought two frames from Fred and both came with trigger jobs.  I understand you can buy your frame from Ebco with a trigger job also.  I love my G2's but the certainly need trigger work.

I Make Oil, when you ordered the frames, did you have to have them shipped to your FFL dealer?

If you get a Contender with a 14" 30-30AI barrel on it you will forget about the 41 mag barrel.  ;D To the question will the frames have to go through your FFL the answer is YES. If you have some good gun shows around you check them out. Many times people have frames and barrels separate for sale. Check out pawn shops. Sometimes you can find a real deal on a Contender in a pawn shop.

You may wanna chesck out the 357Max instead of the 41mag....Just a thought it is easy to find a 357 mag or max barrel and have it reamed to Max.

Why would you want to forget about any barrel?  Get em all.  I know I am working on it.

Sorry so long on a reply I did not see the question untill now.  Reading through this tread again I have a few comments.  Contenders are something that I have always liked since I saw the first one as a kid that a friend of my dad's had.  I bought my first Contender when I was in the military and kept it until someone broke into my house on base and stole it.  Took me a while but I got another and I am glad I did but they have always been difficult to find for me.  Then along came the internet and it has been gasoline on a fire!  LOL.  I would HIGHLY recommend that you buy a frame from some custom place on the net and either buy it with a trigger job or have them do one before it is sent to you.  There are plenty of places all over just google them and then have it sent to a local FFL.  I have bought 1 frame here on GBO and am currently working on buying another.  But if you are buying your first go ahead and get a new one cause good used ones don't come around often from what I have seen.  Barrels are are a different ball of wax.  I used to buy them on Ebay back when I could.  Now I pick them up here, gunbroker.com and other places.  Usually if I want something though unless I see it here I just call Ed.  You get what you want and you don't have to wait and hope you see it somewhere eise.  Also Ed often has something I didn't even know I wanted!  LOL.  He is a nice guy and easy to deal with.  I have probably bought 8 different barrels from him and have never had a problem.  Good luck and welcome to the addiction.

X 2 on the pawn shop. I've picked up three from pawns at low low prices.
