FTF with hammer extension

I know I've read about this on here before but for the life of me I cant find it.  What is the solution for a handi that light-strikes the primer after a hammer extension is installed.  A friend has a 45-70 BC that worked fine with irons but when he mounted a scope and added the extension, about every other round is a FTF.

Installed a Wolff extra power hammer spring and/or do Fred's firing pin improvement, both are in the FAQs, see misfires in the Handi Basics.

It may by increasing pin projection, but it may also cause a problem by not having enough clearance for the firing pin when the hammer is at rest, just depends, you'll have to do some checking to see if it will help without resting on the firing pin, don't ask how I know that's a problem.  :-\

Not for nothing. (it's a Jersey term) Pronounced NOTFurNutin as one word hence the term rather than phrase.
I just have to ask the silly questions as I can not see how you installed the scope.
But does the extension or the hammer hit the scope in any way, shape, or form?
even a light brush can create a FTF.
Moving the extension under the hammer or repositioning the scope back a little may fix the problem before you take a drill, file or saw to parts.

Im trying to help a bud out over the phone and I dont have physical access to the rifle.  I asked if the hammer is hitting the scope and he said no.  I would not think he would be mechanically inclined enough to attempt any disassembly of the gun but i do think he could manage to grind a little off the hammer with a dremel tool or drill a hole or two to lighten it up a bit.  BTW, Tim, thats what I meant.  Lightening up the hammer to compensate for the added weight of the spur, not removing material from the face of the hammer to increase pin projection.  Thanks for the help fellas.

Just realized this is my 100th post...woo-hoo!  I listen alot more than I talk here.

Drilling the hammer isn't as easy as it sounds, it's hardened, has to be annealed to drill it. Being sintered metal, rehardening it so it doesn't break after weakening it by drilling the holes opens another can of worms.

If it's a factory fitted barrel he's working with, he should make arrangement with H&R to have it repaired, although they'll just replace the hammer spring with another factory spring. Have him download and read both trigger hone links in the FAQs, he may want to do a trigger job anyway.  ;)

If it worked before the scope and H.ext. but not now, what changed 'in the gun'?

I assume that in some cases, the factory hammer spring is not stout enough to sufficiently accelerate the hammer for reliable firing with the added weight of the extension.  Ive read about it on here before but I've never had it happen on any of the handis ive owned.

I would be careful grinding or drilling the hammer, I just read in the last couple weeks how one of our Handi holics hammer broke part off, due to stress or modification? But just be aware, what you do to fix one problem could cause another. Just my thought. thejanitor

Was getting a lot of FTF using SINGLE SIDED hammer extension too.

Got a mate to make me a double sided hammer extension (left and right protrusion off the hammer)
never got any FTF after that.

The unbalanced weight sorta twist the hammer to one side, causing some friction to slow it down thus cause FTF.
