Talking advertisements are REALLY annoying.
« on: November 13, 2010, 04:52:59 AM »
Greybeard has threatened more than once to kick me off this forum.

The talking ads are doing a good job of keeping me away.

Anyone else feel that way?

They're here to stay until the end of the year, but there are some steps you can take to eliminate them.

Tim

I hate pop ups always have. I really thought I'd never see the day I'd allow them here but I was led to believe the income from these would likely exceed $3000 a month. That was a seriously and gross over statement. If it were that much honestly I think I'd have to continue living with them.

I asked if the revenue would be an amount I felt was about the minimum I was willing to live with them for a trial period and was given the above figure and I dunno about you guys but that's more money than I make each month so I just couldn't turn it down.

As it worked out it has fallen short of that minimum figure I was willing to give them a trail for by at least a couple hundred dollars. That's just not acceptable but I am bound by a contract and must live with it until the end of the year.

Folks, I know they are a pain but we are getting about four times what the other banners of theirs pay when they are displayed. We display 3.1 million pages a month... that adds a lot of dollars to our monthly income for GBO which more than triples it and in a time when we need it really bad. If it does not pan out and pay us what we are expecting and have been told we will make, then they will go away but until then lets see what happens. For those who hate ads there are many ways around them to include becoming a GBO Subscriber which removes ALL ads from GBO for you. We have to pay the bills somehow so unless some of you are willing to start footing the bills why not just hit the close button after it comes up and continue on surfing the site. Now if you are running 800x600 like GB yes it is a REAL PITA but based on our analytics software that is only a handful of people, less than 1% of the members.

What talking ads?  ???

I turned my speakers off a long time ago and only turn them on if I'm gonna watch a video link with sound that I wanna hear.

I promise you that you are no more tired of them than I am but I signed a contract that binds me to them until the end of year. They won't return after the contract ends even tho my finances really need the funds.

If they are paying the bills, I can live with them just fine.  Only takes a quick click to another page or to the "x" above the add to make it go away.  Heck, I already have a Chevy truck.

I would respectfully suggest that members uncomfortable with the ads get over it and/or deal with it, since the samo-samo ads seem to be starting up on several other gun-related forum websites as well as here.

It looks like the advert folks have an active marketing/sales team out there...........................

For some of us, turning the speakers off is not really an option.  In my case, I rely heavily on Skype calls to communicate with my coworkers.  Even after normal hours I need to stay available.

Glad they are going away at year end.

Times are tough for people.  I really appreciate the forums I'm on but can't subscribe to them all.

I just hit close and have no problem because I know it pays bills.  Once a day when I open my forums I also hit one or two banners as I heard that generates a hit for the forum and keeps ad dollars flowing. Nothing free in this world and a good workman is worth his hire.

I would really like it if you could dump the guy and double up on the blond though.  She always gets a smile!

Better yet, get a good looking blonde and put her in a bikini... or less...

To stop it all you need to do is use Firefox browser and download the Adblock Plus plugin and it all goes away.  Firefox is the ONLY browser!!!
