3.5x10 or 4.5x14
« on: November 13, 2010, 05:05:27 AM »
I'm having a custom rifle built.  It will be a 6.5-06 built on an Arg/Mauser action.  It will have a Shilen 26" light varmint barrel.  This will be a reach out and touch someone rifle.  It will be in excess of 9 lbs so carring it all day is out of the question. This will be a stand or blind gun.  That said I need to chose a scope. I'm prejudice toward Leupold I don't think I can buy a better scope for the money. What are the advantages/disadvantages between the 3.5x10 and 4.5x14.

My favorite for Leupold is the 4.5 x 14 x 50 vx111.  For a reach out deer rifle scope its hard to beat.  It's easy to pick up deer on 4.5 power for a quick shot.  I was looking at mule deer on the other ridge at a little over 500 yards range finder # and they looked small at 14x.  For a hunting scope it is awesome IMO.

I agree with Bullet...I have quite a few customs but are fairly lite in weight.  I've never found a 3.5x10 lacking but do scope UP when I can.  If you're going to be stationary (more or less) a 4x14 or somesuch would be just great!

I think that the 50 is the way to go----I have a VXII in a 4x12 on a Speedmaster .22.
The after thought will find me purchaseing a VX3 in a 4.5 X 14 for the T-Bolt Browning .22 that is a projectfor the first of the year, 40mm.
Hard to get a 50mm on a .22 properly.
If I get---yea, I know, snickersnicker--the Bolt, tube fed Marlin with a Bull Barrel I will put a 50 on it.
The thinking for a gun past the T-Bolt may be a .223 for some amount of range---in this case---well in this case, the project could end up with something from the custom shop or at least a long range piece of glass.
Course, all I am doing is punching paper.
Blessings

Thanks guys, my sons trying to talk me into a 3.5x10 but hasn't yet!  I have a 4x12 on my 280 Rem which is a fine combo but I just want this gun.  It's the missing link in my battery.  30-30 Win 94 (with my eye I need to get peep sights).  99 Savage in 308 with a 2x7 Leupold, and a Rem 700 in 280 Rem with a 4x12 Leupold.  I have no intention of hunting moose or grizzly bear but a friend a gave me a 450 marlin that I fired once, I'm not sure I ever will again but if I need a thumper I have it  ;)

For a all around gun the 3 1/2 X 10 but from a stand the 4 X 14. I also am a Leupold fan and have them up to an 8 1/2 X 25. It`s on a 22-6mm which I use for sniping coyotes. I dial in elevation and use mil-dots for wind drift and lead, I would recomand that you get mil-dots and target knobs. With that 6.5-06 you can justify it scope and a very good range finder.
