32 H&R MAG legal for deer in IL ?

takin a couple of boyz out on a 1st deer hunt in the MOMENCE WETLANDS, figure I will end up being the gunbearer after awhile
I want to carry a lite pistol under my jacket.

is 32 mag enough,   I do have a collection of Rugers if I do need to carry one of those so be it

If your a good patient hunter and wait for s good shot with in 30 - 40 yards, than yes the lil 32 maggie is enough. ( even then I would want a good bullet at top velocities)

If your gonna take what evershot that's offered, no go vget a 44

if you hunting 2nd season or the late winter antlerless season you can use a pistol but dont put it under your jacket just my 2cents

While the regulations say that there is not a minumum length on a cartridge case of at least .30 cal, it does say that published balistic tables of the manufacture must be avalible that show a capability of at least
500 foot lbs of energy at the muzzle. Will that .32 H&R mag do this?

This is a Illinois based math problem.  Here is how it works out:

FT Lbs = velocity² times bullet weight in grains divided by 450380

You need 500 ft lbs in IL for it to be legal for deer.  So to figure needed velocity you need to do this:

Multiply 500 times 450380 and divide by bullet weight in grains then take the square root of that number.

For a 100 gr bullet you need 1500 feet/second.

For an 85 grain bullet you need 1628 feet/second.

Even if I could find a 32 H&R at that speed, I still would not use it.  I don't think that .327 Federal Magnum reaches those speeds.  There are better tools for the job.

  Just FYI, I was down in IL for the 2nd gun season with just a few anterless tags. As luck would have it a narly wallhanger(10 pt +) walked right under my stand the 1st day. While not a record, he was a shooter in anyone's book. He had a slight limp, though it seemed not to be life threatening. I hope he's even larger next year. The next day another guy in our group shot a mid grade 9 pointer that had 2 fairly fresh bullet wounds. These were days + old & may of been a detriment to long term health. The point being, the goal is not just to hit the deer, but to put an adequate round in the vitals. Another guy I talked to lamented about the large deer he shot at but didn't collect. His range was 100yrds+ with a 20 ga slug. I don't recall the specifics on a hit or clean miss. I'm not even saying a 20 ga slug is inadequate for the shot, just saying.

I have hand loaded for the .32 mag since it was brought to market.  There is NO way I would consider this a round for deer.  I do on the other hand love it for small game on up to coyote.

Looked at Hogdon's web site and found:

max load 100gr bullet = 1208 ft/sec

max load 85gr bullet = 1263 ft/sec

conclusion: Nope, the 32H&R mag is NOT legal for deer in IL

I doubt your caliber of choice is legal within Illinois for whitetailed deer. Ammunition needs at least published 500 foot pounds of energy. All regs governing this hunting within our state are published yearly in the DNR hunting regs magazine available at any Walmart or Kmart or any outdoor store or go online at
