« on: November 14, 2010, 07:25:41 AM »
I just ordered up some 200gr. round nose ammo for my 357. I know alot of you guys have Maxi's... what are you feeding them?
Just a side note... I don't even have the reamer yet and I ordered Max ammo... I got a problem. ;D

It's a good problem tho!!  8) Pete should know what ammo to recommend, he's shot factory in his I'm pretty sure.

Ya probably have  2-3 weeks wait for the reamer, it just went out to jeepmann1 yesterday, then there's one more on the list before you're up.  ;)

Iffin your asking about factory fodder I'llbow to others who use the stuff. ;)

But for hand loads I've been doing that for a spell ;)

IMHO forget about anything over 180. The 180s work so well there really is no reason for anything else. Speaking from a deer hunting stand point. I like the Hornady SSP and XTP, the Speer 180 FP and 170 GDSP bullets.

For varmints I would look at 140 & 158 HPs if you get your hands on old 125 SPs those are very good too. The 110 & 125s are very speedy and initiate what ever they hit. Much like a hp in.a 22/250 or 220 swift. At least at rifle velocities.

The 200s just don't get going fast enough for good performance much past fifty yards the lil maxi case just dosent have the capacity. Again speaking from a use on deer sized game stand point.

For powders, I prefer AA1680, 4227 and RL7. Altho the RL is bulky and top velocities are not there it's accurate for punching paper.

Enjoy your new Maxi and welcome to the Maxi club brother Spanky !!

Thanks guys. I plan on shooting 180's in it but I found a cheap price online for the 200's so I'll give 'em a whirl. I've got to get a set of dies and start loading for it. ;D
I've got 158gr. mag loads for it now... I'll use those for deer season.

I've gotten 180s from Reeds, Ammo Bank......and someone else, can' remember.  They all shot fine.  Just now, I'm loading them over H110 and 296...those powders are the same thing, and I've got it.  I need to play with a slower burning rifle powder, but for now, I'm shooting up what I've got.  That little baby is a smacker, and is sitting here pouting cause she's not going out just now.  Also, for anyone interested, it shoots .38s and mags very well.

So far I've only run handloads with 158gr. Rem SP's thru mine.  That's with a case full of A 1680 powder.  I'm loaded up with 180's, just need to get em into cases.  Just picked up 2 boxes (500) of the Nosler 180gr silhouette 357's for $35.00. ;D  Not sure how those will work on game, small meplat with jacket, but will find out down the road.  At that price, I can just bust rocks. ;)  DP

Spanky,

The 180 Hornady HP/XTPs over 19 grains of H110 are accurate enough out of my Maxi to shoot fox squirrels.   My barrel is a reamed out 18 3/4" talo trapper.   The 180s shot the same up to about 21 grains but I didn't think I needed the extra powder to get full penetraton of a tree rat. ;D  I just made a deal to hunt deer on private land next year in Indiana, so I plan on buying some 180 SSPs and a jug of AA1680 to work up a whitetail load next summer.  Enjoy your Maxi.

Shot my first maxi deer this evening with 180 gr. XTP's.  My load is exactly the same as Bikerbeans.  The doe was running, albeit not full speed, and I led her a little much and took her through the shouders at 85 yd.  Both shoulders were broken so badly she cound go no further, and was trying to push with her back legs when I walked up and shot her in the head.  I had concerns the hollow point would expand too much, but it broke big bone in both shoulders and exited.  BIG wound channel.  I cut the hind quarter off and discarded everything else.

GOOD TO HEAR!!

I know what you mean, any hollow point in a hunting bullet always caused me to pause and question too much expantion. But as you have now seen, its just fine in this caliber at these velocities!! Thats on par with what I have found using the XTP too!!

I feed my 357 Max a steady diet of Sierra 200gr RN bullets.  They're deadly accurate and have suprising velocity when paired with IMR4227.  I've taken 9 deer with this combo in the past two years with all one shots kills and complete penetration.  Some drop at the shot, but most make it about 35-50yds and expire.  It's easily comparable to the 35 Remington in regards to ballistics.   ;D

I'm using 28.5gr. AA1680 powder pushing a Hornady 180 SSP bullet at 2150fps. Extremely accurate out to 150 yards. Devastating on deer. I just took my first 120lb doe with it this past weekend. I tried 200gr. flex tip bullets with 1680 and 4227 powder. They were accurate out to 75 yards and fell off from there.
