New to deer hunting in Ohio.
« on: November 14, 2010, 02:43:07 PM »
I will be deer hunting in Delaware county Ohio for gun season this year. I will be using my H&R slug gun and maybe a handgun. Looking at the regs the hangun must be .357 or larger. It appears that you must wear a blaze orange vest or jacket. What are the licencing requirments?

You can get the licenses online. http://www.greatlodge.com/oh/license/options
that should give you a start. The ODNR has all the requirements online and hunting regs on their website too.

Also note that you can't carry the pistol and the shot gun at the same time.  Exception is you can carry the pistol if you have a CCW, but can't use it for hunting.  Good luck...there's a lot of deer around there.

Billy, I think she will need a licence if she's not considered a resident. Also, if she's considered a resident, she doesn't need a regular hunting licence, but, she needs a deer tag. Kinda like waterfowl hunting here in Ohio. If your on your own property, you don't need a small game licence, but you would need a state and federal stamp. Make sure you and her bring a copy of a previous hunting licence. Here in Ohio, before you can get a hunting licence, you must prove experience,(previous licence), or have a safe hunting certificate. Good luck!! I won't be far from you, as I'm setting up at a gun show in Columbus this coming weekend. If I hit a deer on the way home Sunday night on St.Rt. 23 in Delaware cty., I'll leave it on the side of the road for ya!! :D :D  gypsyman

From the Ohio hunting regulations booklet which you can also download online in its entirety:

"Landowners, spouses and their children - Are not required to have a hunting license, fur taker permit, deer permit, antlerless deer permit, spring or fall turkey permit or Ohio Wetland Habitat Stamp when they are hunting or trapping on land they own."

There is no mention of whether they have to be residents for this privilege.  Also, it's possible that you being a son-in-law of the landowner might give you that privilege but I would call the Ohio DNR to be sure on that one.

Regarding tags to hunt on your own property; you can make them yourself.  They have to include your name, address and date and time of the kill.

My daughter doesn't need license or deer tag on my place.  Son-in-law needs both.  Grandson only needs a deer tag.  I have been unable to find out if a non-resident land owner needs either.  Contact Division Headquarters, but this post is a bit late for that.
