Favorite powder for 180's in the 30-06?
« on: November 14, 2010, 04:56:15 PM »
Hello everyone, I've got a few different 180 grain bullets that I'm going to try in my 30-06 and was wondering what powder you folks have had the best luck with.

Thanks!
GOOD SHOOTING!

IMR-4350 is my favorite in the '06.

4831 and IMR4350 but I can't wait to get some new Hornady Superformance power that they are loading in their new Superformance ammo line. It is coming out as a component soon.  I have an Interarms .243 w/ 24" barrel that I loaded with Hornady Light Mag ammo because I couldn't safety load to the velocity Lt Mag gave me w/ 100 gr. bullets (3000fps).  We chrono-ed a few rounds of the new Hornady Superformance 100 gr. load and it was kissing 3200fps+/- and 2 five shot groups were .75-.95" @ 100 yds. Their 30-06 claim is similar.

I have found 56 gr of 4350 to work great. Also hear 4831 is a great powder.
Thanks Don.

Plus 1 with 56gr of IMR-4350. That is my '06 load.

56 gr of H4350... Its the only powder I have tried for the 180 in the 06, but with .40" 3-shot groups (carefully shot), why keep looking.

Thanks for all the replies folks!
I've got to get some more IMR-4350, I just used up what I had putting 57 grains under 165 grainers in the old '06. It sure would be sweet if the 180's work out good with the same powder as the 165's.

Thanks again!

GOOD SHOOTING!

I like Varget. I don't like being beat around by the IMR 4350, altho it's an excellent powder for the 180's...

[VOICE OF REASON HERE]  ::) Be aware, that the 56grs for the 180 and 57grs for the 165 are max loads. They may very well prove perfectly safe, but you do not know that. Please lower by at least 10% and work up in  your firearm.

+++++++ on IMR 4350 , Most will say it was made for the 06 , Ive had several 06's tryed several powders but always went back to the good ole IMR 4350 , havent seen an 06 that didnt shoot it well . My 700 with 54 grns under a 180 Sierra spitzer will cut a ragged hole in the paper @ 100 yds , My Sons mdl 77 shoots the same load same 180 with a slightly different seating depth , same ragged hole @100 yds .I think there are other poders that do well outa the 06 But ............like CW said " is there another"? I dont think so  ;D

yep,  IMR 4350 at 54 to 55 gr has been fantastic for me in my pre 64 '06.  Its also what convinced me that Ken Waters knew what he was doing with his Pet Loads articles.  I fooled around with various combinations with marginal luck.  Then found Ken's article on the 30-06 (his first update) and tried this load first. I've rarely tried anything else since.  I load 180 Speer Hot Core, Nosler Solid Base, or Rem Cor Loks for practice and Nosler Partitions for hunting.  Works like a charm.  I have had good luck with IMR 4831 too but don't recall the charge weight and mostly save that powder for my 300 win mag.. Oh, I generally use CCI standard rifle primers and RP brass.

I've tried AA3100 with ok results.

I begin with a starting load of H4350 and magnum primers and work up to a medium load. Try to stay away from max loads as they are really not worth the wear and tear on the rifle, brass, and shooter.

I use IMR 4064 with Sierra 180 out of my Tikka 30-06.  VERY tight groups!
