458 Winchester Mag. - what good reduced loads?
« on: November 15, 2010, 08:42:49 AM »
Looking for a good reduced load in the 458 Winchester Magnum.  405 grain JSP bullet.  Looking for the low end of 1300 to 1800 fps.  Prefer 4198, 4064, 3031 or R7 if possible.  (No SR4759 available here at the moment).  Anyone?

Thanks.

I would likely look at trapdoor 45-70 loads for a starting point.

Try 15 gr of Unique with little poly fill that should get about 1400 fps.

Thanks.  I'm a little wary of using unaltered 45-70 loads in the larger 458 case and I don't want to use a filler.  I can't locate any SR4759 in town at the moment.  Any other options for the 405 grainer?

Has anyone tried the Alliant listed load for the 500 grainer with 2400 at 35 grains?  Said to be 1415 fps.

Get some good cast boolits and take a trip over to the Cast Boolits forum for all the info you need.

AS here, a good bunch of folks over there, most all willing to help.

I took my first cast boolit game animal this Fall with a 355gr LBT/WFN cast boolit ahead of 55gr of RL #7.

About 2290fps from my 22" barreled #1.

May not be reduced as far as you desire, but the info will be available if you seek it out.

Enjoy,

Keep em coming!

Oooooooooops --------------

Tacotime,

Failed to mention that my critter was taken with a 45/70 and although my loads are approaching 458 levels, it is still a 45/70.

Keep em coming!
