spilled powder??
« on: November 15, 2010, 10:11:58 AM »
Getting my IMR 3031 out of the cabinet and, yep, dropped the bottle.  Lid pops off, at least 1/3rd of the powder is all over the floor.  I used what was left in the jug to load up some 30-30 rounds, but now I'm not sure what to do with the spilled powder. I have  swept it up, now what?  Scatter it outside? Try to salvage it? It was on the floor of my basement so it is pretty filthy; dog hair, dust, bits of leaves, etc. What would ya'll do, just trash it and mark of that 8 bucks worth of powder to stupity and not make the same mistake again?

That's what I figured.  Thanks guys for the prompt answer.  Love this forum, I rarely have to ask a question because all I need to know is already here and available.  However, this was the 2nd question I had today and I received good feedback in a short amount of time. Appreciate ya'll.

Word of warning: Do NOT use a vacuum to pick up loose powder, or vacuum a rug onto which powder has spilled.
There may be sparks created inside the vacuum, or sparks may be created by static electricity or metallic objects (pins, needles, bobby pins, steel BBs, etc.) striking metal inside the vacuum.
Usually, the vacuum goes "whoosh" and then catches fire, or smoke billows out.
If you MUST use a vacuum, be ready to pull the vacuum's cord and haul it outside in a hurry. A standby fire extinguisher, rated for electrical appliances, is suggested.

sucked up power for years with the vacume, so far so good. Did have a primmer go off after being sucked up. Vacume spend the night out on the back porch.

Where do you get a spark from a plastic nozzle, plastic or wood rollers, plastic hose, and paper bag?  If ones vacuum is throwing out sparks somewhere it's time for a new vacuum cleaner.  Seriously, I've vacuumed up spilled power hundreds of times.  Every time I reload there is some powder that has blown or spilled onto the reloading bench and I just brush it off onto the carpet and vacuum it later.

Air alone moving through a plastic tube WILL build a static charge , at that point all you need is to do is ground it some way and you WILL have a spark .

One spark is all that is needed to light smokeless powder , not to mention the dust that is already inside the vac , ever see a grain mill explode = very nasty .

This is why the Hodgdon's powder cans say "Keep away from Heat , Open Flames and Sparks , avoid Impact and Friction "
