Bad Ice Blues""""
« on: December 10, 2003, 08:02:55 AM »
My friend Mike tucker and I ,started working icebound rats this last weekend.Of course it had to warm up,which had us watching for open water and thin ice around rat houses.Many of the houses we could'nt even set because of open water around them.
 I still went through several times when setting the trap.Also got to practice flying straight up in the air,only problem with this is when I landed---total back and head contact with ice[even bad ice hurts]  lol
 The capper was ,on the last check,I also got to do the ---see how deep that water under the ice really is----- Mike had cautiously crossed,I then sent the loaded otter sled across.I decided that if the loaded sled could make it ,I could too.Half way acroos I found this to be untrue.{oh by the way,that water under the ice---came right up to the top of my waders}
 Now the fun really begins,we have just been hit with a foot of snow.The next check is bound to provide enough exitement for a lifetime.
 Now bad ice and open water will be hidden by a foot of snow,a rope and life preserver will be making the next trip with us.
 Can't believe what a guy will do ,to make a living------On second thought--I can.  Tom

 Lee,coffee is a prerequisite,I never trap without it.

Tom;
  That sort of excitement, I can live without. :eek:   Seeing coyotes bouncing around in my trap is excitement enough for this old heart. No matter how many I catch (maybe one or two ) I never get tired of seeing it.  Just like a kid at Christmas!!

Bog your not the only one having fun. The beaver ponds around were just getting to where you could walk on some of them. Today it poured rain all day long and still raining. The ponds are down to about a 1/4 inch of ice and water flowing over the dam's like crazy.

The only thing my waders were good for today was Catching water and Pine needles. And I still havnt figure out how those darn pine needle get into some of the places they do.  :x

It's still 40 degree's here @ 9:30pm. The weather man is saying it's going to drop tonight to the 20's and snow. Sure wish we would get back to the winter's like we had in the 60s and 70s. When it was'nt uncommon to have 12-24 inches of snow hit around Thankgiving.

:shock: And how COLD was that water???? :shock:

I think I would get a push pole for that otter sled if it were big enough. Looking at the forecast though it should be solid enough in a couple nites?

Marshin,I sure hope that ice is some better in the morning.Only problem is ,snow insulates and hampers the freezing process.
 And there is no way we could pole an otter sled.Unless we had 48 hours of daylight and bionic arms.  Tom

Hey Tom, I feel your pain.  I like to walk the small rivers after ice up to trap otters.  Cant hardly stay on top.  These rivers are only mostly 1 to 2 feet deep and my shins are getting so beat up a man almost needs knee pads to protect them.  The problem should be fixed now though was -11 this morning up here and not much snow.

Steven,it was 0 when we pulled in to check traps today.Couldnt believe that the channel leading to the lake was open in many spots.Heck when you want it to stay open ,it freezes tight at 27 degrees.
 We could'nt get to all our sets,spud went right through.I still went through the ice several times,at some huts.Hi today was 9,and it is supposed to be below 0 tonight.Gonna pull tomorrow,its supposed to hit 30 on sunday.
 At least we had our exitement.   Tom

Tom latest update on this mornings low temp. was minus 21.  Heck it was minus 11 when I got up.  Got laid off yesterday for the winter and didnt get home until late so slept in a little this morning.   Was going to put in some beaver sets today but it never got above zero and it is supposed to warm up starting tommorow so I can wait another day.  Checked some fisher traps and put out a couple snares for fox.

It is a good thing that rat prices are down.  You could drive a couple hundred miles up here and not see as many houses as I did crossing the Minnesota River on Hwy 169.  Oh well I guess I will have to just chase the beaver.  I dont have too much common sense and am going to try catch a hundred before the first of the year.
