Ironic ain't it.
« on: November 17, 2010, 01:08:47 PM »
I've had a 44 mag Handi for years and could never see why folks bragged so much about the 357 mag and 45 colt Handi's. I owned a 357 barrel for a while and it shot OK but I still didn't understand all the fuss. The 45 (in my opinion) is outclassed by the 44 mag with factory ammo so I didn't really see what all the fuss was about there either.
Fast forward a little but and I start thinking about the 357 again... especially since the ream to Max is a quick and easy job and so many guys are bragging about them. I went out and ordered a new 357mag Handi. :)
Well to pay for it I sold my beloved 44mag barrel. Now I have my 357 and it shoots REALLY REALLY good... way better than the old 44 did. Well OK so far, so good. Now I went and made a deal to buy a like new 45colt barrel too. ;D
So how did I go from being a die hard 44mag guy who had no use for the 357 or 45 to selling my good shooting 44mag and getting BOTH of the others?? Is there something wrong with me or what?
Now to top it off... I want a NEW 44mag with the good bore. ::)
When does it end?

When does it end?

There's little evidence to suggest it does end... if it refers to Handiholicism. ;D

Spanky,

Nothing to explain, just go for the 44 cal.  I would suggest that you supersize it to 444M. ;D

Amateurs.  I have a 44 mag, a 444, a 357 reamed to max, and 4 (yes, 4) 45 Colts.  I have a 454 reamer on the way, so at least 2 of them will get the stretched out treatment.  As for the addiction, what addiction?  I can quit anytime I want!

I've already been checking on 454 reamers and I don't even have the barrel yet. ;D  Oh yeah... the 357 is getting the Max reamer too. ;)

Heck I buy old holsters at yard sales and then tell the bride that pistol would be perfect for that holster I got. with a 38spec.357mag357max a 44spec44mag445 and a 45colt454casull460S&W a person is fairly covered for finding some ammo somewhere he can shoot

Don't forget about the 360DW and the 44 Russian.
That's alot of versatility out of 3 rifles. :o ;D and there's probably some we left out.
I've made up my mind... I am going to get a new 44... I can't have all this ammo sittin' here and nothing to shoot it out of. :D

Spanky, if you still have 44 mag ammo, then you MUST have a 44 mag barrel.  It's in the rules of Handiholics.  Can't do anything but get another barrel.  ENJOY!  DP

Pete, it's a terrible waste not to have a .44 Handi, period.  Ya can always find the ammo.  My .45LC is pouting and is neglected.  As soon as this deer fever is over, I've got to get her out and feeling responsible again, even if we're only knocking off porcupines.  Just this morning she was asking where the .38-55 and .445 went to.  I hate to lie, but I had to tell her something :'(

I currently have an original 357Maxi, a 45 colt re-chambered to 454 Casull. Both in handis. I have owned a 44Mag handi and sold it. I currently own three 45Colt and two 357mag Marlins. I have also owned and sold two 44 mag Marlins and one Ruger bolt 44. Speaking of Rugers, I have a number of Black Hawks in 357Mag as well as 45 Colts. I had a couple 44 mags and well, yup you guessed it, I sold them too.  ::) I cant put my finger on why. I mean I know its a great caliber. it just dosen't "do it" for me. It doses absolutely nothing my handloaded 45 cant or won't do better.

I have been on this 44 vs 45 bus for some time. Truth be told there is very little differences between the two when good hand loads in the 45 are compared to good 44 hand loads. If you don't hand load and have a need for more power like you want to hunt then the 44 is the way to go. If you do hand load, the 45 opens avenues you haven't even known exist. The 45 is a awesome platform for about any load sane load you can create.

As far as the affinity to the 357, well Americans have had this fascination since its introduction in early 1935!! I also think deep down, as americans we think bigger is better, another reason like cream, the 45 comes out on top. JMHO :o ;)

It actually shoots pretty good. I've busted alot of clay pigeons with it at 100 yds.
It's been cut down and balances perfectly too... makes for a great carrying gun.

I could donate a number or two myself.  One of them is one of the finest women to walk the earth.  We married for economic reasons and parted as friends and lovers....for the same economic reasons; plus, she wanted the Wild West and I wanted the North Woods.  She's now married to a nice guy, but to me he's a little stuffy and cityish.  Living in a Condo in Colorado ::) ::)

Going back to guns.....I've got back just about all I've sold, except an Ithaca 37 16 ga. pump I hated....don't ever want it back.  My dad gave me my first real rifle when I was eleven.  A Reminton 521T.  It was stolen in Florida about 25 years ago.  I know who stole it....the sister of the other unnamed x-wife above.  The irony of the thing is I got four things that I valued from my dad.  A white gold pocket watch, a pair of binoculars, a fine tap and die set and that rifle....the B..tch got all of them.

Spanky

I hate selling guns, too but sometimes you need quick cash and they're like money in the bank. My ex-wife stole my identity, took out credit cards in my name, let them go into collections and ruined my credit. I had to sell a bunch of my guns not too long ago so I'd have money to pay off collection agencies thanks to that C*NT. I got custody of my kids so that's really all that matters to me, guns can always be replaced.

I did get lucky after I sold my guns, though. I saw an ad in the local classifieds for a T/C G2 Contender with a bunch of barrels and Leupold scopes for a really cheap price. I still had cash in hand from selling my other guns so I bought it and sold some of the barrels and scopes on the classifieds here. I ended up making all my money back plus ended up with a free G2 Contender pistol with a 10" 45 Colt barrel that I'm using to hunt with this year.

I also lucked out and found a wonderful new girlfriend this past year. She went hunting with me this past weekend and she loved it. She hasn't taken the safety course yet but she has an SB1 .410 Pardner that I bought her when I first met her so I'd like to get her either a .357 Mag/Max or .45 colt barrel for it next time funds allow so she'll have something for next year.
