I need something new.I had been hunting deer from a tree stand but every time i turn around in the direction of the deer footsteps i hear, it turns out to just be a squirell rustling in the leaves. I brought out my crossman 760 to see what i could do.I got one with a neck shot but he just climbed back up the tree.I was looking for something more powerful and saw the winchester 1000x its only $110 and seems like the most powerful for the money. Does anyone have experience with this gun. Or im open for any other guns you might reccomend for a similar price. 22 caliber looks better for hunting but  couldnt find any with enough power that are in my price range.Does the 1000x come in 22?

   P.S. il be eating them

You might try a benjamin model 392. It is .22 cal and can be had online for about 110.00. It gives excellent power and accuracy is fine for hunting but it is not a match gun. : :D

small game,

First let me Welcome you and 'brownhipower' to Graybeard Outdoors.  The best forum on the net for hunters/shooters going today.  Now to your question.  Yes I bought one for my daughter to replace the Gamo 880 that she wore out.  In my opinion a much better product than the Gamo at much less money.  It chronographs just under the stated velocity(I got 970+/- fps. from hers using Copperhead wad cutter pellets).  She has killed three raccoons and one bobcat with her Win. 1000X.  If you shop around you can find the Win. 1000X for less than $90.00(I paid $89.00).  The main bitch about the Win. is it's heavy trigger pull, 6.5 pounds, but that can be cured.  I prefer springers to pump ups just because they save you time and are less nosey.  For a little more money you can get a RWS 34M and they just came out with it in .20, which is a better all around caliber for target/pest control/small game.  Just a though.  Lawdog

I looked them all up and I think the winchester is my pick.It had some good reviews on review centre. It sounds like everyone has a problem with the trigger pull but taking out a spring fixes that?

Hello there and welcome:

Since you have your heart set on the Winchester, Midsouth, Natchez, D& R
and others have them priced at around $80 in my latest catalogs. Yep, I just looked up in my new D&R out of Pa. and they are listed at $80.27. Of course, you pay freight on it. They are: http://www.dnrsports.com. Telephone number is: 570-735-1752.

They are good people to do business with. I don't know them personally, or have any investment in this company. Just trying to help you save some money. The very best to you.

Take care, God Bless, and be safe.

hey!
I have this gun, it shoots very well.  It is very powerful, and accuracy is extremely good.  From 50+ yards i can usually put pellets into a 1.5 inch circle.  The trigger sucks..yeah..and removing that one spring does nothing.  You can quickly get used to the trigger though, and i am going to try to mod the trigger some when i get home from college in a few days...ill let you guys know how it goes! ANy advise on lightening trigger pull guys?  I dont want to ruin my gun!!!

wrx101383,

I cheated with my daughter's 1000X.  I took it to a gunsmith friend and he did a little work with a file and a stone so that now the trigger pull is around 3 3/4 to 4 pounds.  Only cost me $20.00 and I believe it was worth it.  I also added a trigger shoe to it and that does help.  Like I said in my opinion it's a much better rifle than a Gamo 890 and a heck of a lot easier on the wallet.  Lawdog

This summer, I bought a 1K to defend my birdfeeders from marauding squirrels. Being an airgun neophyte, I thought that no airgun could take out a squirrel, which I considered to be a de-facto armored creature. One day, though, a bushy-tail was foraging about in the back-yard fur exclusion zone, and I popped 'im in the butt ... just to spank him. (About 10yd range, Beeman Silver Bear round.) He successfully fled up a nearby tall tree.

About 15 minutes later, my wife was out in the garden, and said squirrel's carcass plummeted from the tree and nearly landed on her head. Close inspection of the body revealed that the pellet had entered high (i.e. dorsally, near the spine) in the right flank. The round probably nicked the big IVC vein, causing the varmint to exsanguinate.

Five bird feeder bandits later, I can attest that the 1000X will eliminate squirrels at short range. I aim for chest now; with a hit in the heart/lungs, they'll depart life in about 10 sec. I'm not yet a good enough shot to hit them in the head, but if I could, there's no doubt in my mind that they'd expire instantly. (I am striving to improve my aim with regular target practice.)

The owner's manual lists muzzle energy at 17 ft-lbs. If y'all are getting independent velocity measurements at 970 fps, then 17 is not much of an exaggeration, and the weapon is a pretty powerful one ... at much less bucks than top-end rifles that sport a similar punch.

doc_kreipke,

Just wanted to Welcome you to Graybeard Outdoors.   :D   This IS the place on the net for hunters/shooters who like to discuss their favorite topic, GUNS AND HUNTING.  You might try Beeman Crow Magnum pellets in your 1000X.  They work great in my daughters 1000X.  Really expand to almost double the size.  Anyway, hope to see more posts from you here.  Again Welcome to Graybeard's.  Lawdog
