Have a safe hunt & bring back some good tales!

Washburn County by Chittamo if it's not too crowded.

Got the sabots ready and the slug gun all sighted in. I'll be in an a ladder stand with swivel seat and my Black Cat propane heater ready in case my old bones start to ache. We hunt in southern Shawano County. Hope to go to rifle useage in the next few years. Good Luck and Be Safe.........

ihookem, What can I say, I'm living my dream and it's a dirty dang job but someone has to do it.  ;D I used to also rifle hunt in Michigan, but just can't sqeeze in enough time between Manysodas and the Cheeseville season to continue to do so. In 2011 I'm heading to Nebraska to do the December muzzleloader season. Usually a tag can be obtained over the counter as there are many left.

Know the area Red River you mentioned, have a buddy that used to hunt the Phillips area, but said the deer numbers are down so he hunts around here as of late. I live in southern Shawano County and on a whim 11 years ago decided to hunt in Minnesota. I packed my small camper up and me and a buddy ended up in Orr. The rest as they say is history as I go every year. I now leave my older camper at a friends resort on Pelican Lake. Started going for pizza at the Norway Point Resort on Pelican Lake and a good friendship came to be. I now leave my camper in a parking area the owner has in the back of his property.

Carbineman,

How are the deer numbers in Minnisoda.

Cheese
Cheese, The numbers from what I can tell are not real good. I saw 4 deer this year(7 days) and shot a nice heavy horned buck that I couldn't find, and I was pretty darn dejected. Every year it is about the same but with all the real estate and no hunters, deer can get fairly old and big and they do. The area remains very hard to hunt as the hilly terrain and underbrush just don't leave much for shot selections. I have two areas that I hunt, one an old skidder road next to a steep hill and rocky draw. This opens up into an old staging area that is now canary grass and brush. The other is near the top of a hill on a 6 year old clear cut and replant. Sometimes a buck will run thru while chasing a doe. This year my hunting partner saw one deer.

The locals say wolves have hurt deer numbers, but it has been about the same since I started there in 1999 from what I can tell.

Good work, you two.

I haven't shot one yet because I'm holding out for "the big one".   I haven't seen any yet, either.  That has more to do with why I haven't shot any yet.  I'm continuing to work at it though.

I've got some more Clam Lake elk pics to post as soon as I find out how to move them out of my email.

No bucks here. Got another doe today, late in the day in the snow storm. The AR15 in 6.8 SPC works good.

Hunting north of 77 between Hayward & Minong, I didn't see a wolf track......or a deer.  This is the same country I've shot 35 (legal) deer in over the past 20 years.   ER....maybe that's why.....

....any luck?

I too went empty again this year.(altho the oldest shot a 150 class buck with his bow and took a 8 point on the last day of gun season. Youngest got a 'yote and a nice doe)

I had a few chances at antlerless, but due to low numbers and the boy's success,  let 'em go. Maybe by the time the antlerless hunt comes around, I'll change my mind. Bein' out during the gun season, I did figure out where the Turkeys were hangin' out and altho I had to wear blaze orange, took a double beaded jake yesterday just as the storm hit. Worked a flock of 6 Toms for a hour till the light started to fade, and I figured they were on their way to roost across the valley. I gave up on 'em and happened across a flock of about thirty younger birds and hens on the other side of the ridge. Thought I had heard birds behind me as I worked the Toms, but thought it was just echos off the hilltops. Picked out a big bird in the dim light and snow and thought it was a big hen. Woulda liked to have the youngin' grow in to be a double bearded Tom, but......... a least we'll have fresh turkey along with the venison tenderloins for Christmas.
"where'd you get the gun....son?"

My son and I tag teamed this bruiser 7:15 opening morning.  He gave us the slip right before Halloween but was still chasing a doe three weeks later and it was his downfall.  Taxidermist aged him at 5 1/2 and he looked it.  Went out a couple times after the opener including today but they have gone very nocturnal.  It is painfully quiet even back in the swamp where they should be on their feet before dark.  Seeing plenty crossing roads after dark though. Almost hit three in the past couple days.

Boy that's a beauty, what did it weigh?
Our group (10) got 4 bucks (2-8s  2-6s 1 spike) and 2 does not the best year but better than last year.
