« on: November 17, 2010, 04:29:59 PM »
I was looking for an exploded view of the TC Encore to see how many parts it consists of and came across this...

‎Is it really Zombie Max, if it's not .357 Max?

 not an encore, never happen.   ;D  I would not have been wanting to be holding on to it when it happened

      Shoot....I've known for years that those Tasco's wouldn't hold up ??? ::) ;)
My first guess would be an obstructed barrel or maybe some creative reloading......OUCH!!!

The story is as follows :

"Wasn't sure where to post this so I did it here.
A friend of mine was shooting a .257 STW (Shooting Times Westerner) caliber in a Thompson Center rifle. This is an 8MM Rem Mag. necked down to .257. Don't know what bullet or powder that was used. He had used the same loads hunting and was sitting at the bench when it exploded. He burst both ear drums and had to have stitches and some shrapnel removed from his finger. He also had blood coming out of both ears.The barrel was clean. Don't know exactly what went wrong. Doctor said his ear drums would heal. I don't know any more details than this. Here's what is left of the gun. "

From the way it looks, it exploded in the chamber so I would guess that it was a double powder charge.

It would be hard to double charge a large capacity case such as the 257 STW given the slow powders required.  I suspect the wrong powder, wrong charge of the correct powder, ....?  This is a very high pressure cartridge well in excess of 60K psi. The slightest variation in components when working at max or near max loads could have taken it over the top for an Encore.  This might not have happened in a strong bolt rifle.  I love the Encore idea and have made several bbls for them in wildcat cartridges but I believe the big over bore mags/high pressure rounds are best left to the bolt or Ruger SS type actions. IMO...  Many of the custom after market bbl makers won't chamber in these high pressure rounds.  I have see 2 stretched/sprung frames both in WSM calibers.  This guy should have bought a lottery ticket that day, he is one lucky shooter!

Wow that's scary.  Just looking at the picture you know the guy didn't just get up and walk that one off.  Hope he's alright now.

257 STW would be to much pressure for an encore
