Handi Rifle as a Takedown gun?
« on: November 19, 2010, 12:02:45 AM »
I have a H&R rifle in 22 hornet.  It has iron sights, and a weaver-style rail.  It also comes with a nice redish laminated stock.  I bought it used locally for a good price at a gun shop.  It looked like it was only very slightly used.

Does anyone use their Handirifle as a take down gun, one that you could disassemble and reassemble each time you use it?

I thought it might be convenient to be able to remove the foreend and barrel for storage and reassemble the gun when in the field for hunting/plinking/etc..

Do you simply unscrew and the rescrew the foreend on the gun each time you want to disassemble/reassemble it or do you have some other setup for quick takedown/reassembly of the gun?

Also, has anyone used those quick release weaver-style scope mounts on their rifle?  If so, does the zero stay good after reinstallation onto the rail or do you have to rezero it each time you install the scope?

Thanks!

Sure, people use Handis as takedown rifles.  You can use a case that's marketed for takedownd shotguns to carry it, or even stick it in a backpack.  Take the forend off, push the release and when the barrel tips forward, lift it out.  The "Survivor" models have a forend with a knob on the screw so you don't need a screwdriver.

I'm not sure about the Weaver quick release mounts, but I have seen mounts that are specificly intended to be used in that way.  Maybe the Weaver is one of them.

I take the barrel off the receiver of my handis so I can get two of them in a double shotgun case.  I leave the scopes attached.

I'd get a Survivor forend knob, or a similar thumb screw and it's a two second thing with no tools.  Come to think of it, I have two nice ones living on the filter access door on the new heat pump.   They perhaps could vanish and get replaced with screws.  The scope is another matter....I don't go there.  once mine are set, they stay put.  I'm also real careful about how I handle them.  My .308 Ruger was sighted in 15 years ago, and will, today, punch the eye out of a woodchuck at 200 yards.....if my shakey old butt can do it.

Thanks Fellas.   I called H&R, but they don't sell the survivor knob.  They only sell the entire fore-end (which you have to have fitted by their smith).

Instead, I bought a little screwdriver that I can pack with my gun to fasten and unfasten the retaining screw for the foreend.

Great looking guns fellas!  Thanks for the posts

I do it regularly, spend some time in the FAQs and you'll find things like this that many of us have forgotten!  ;D There's also a tooless forend screw source in the FAQs that's not as bulky as the Survivor knob.  ;)

Its a 12 GA, the SN you can make out in one of the pics, I don't remember the age, but shes old for sure!!

One of my cherished H&R's she goes with me camping and on any trip where my handgun isn't appropriate fits in my small duffel perfectly. I have shot all kinds of critters with it thru the years, its been completely around our country. It was my Grandfathers. He gave it to my Grandmother when they went in Yellowstone and he saw the NO FIREARMS sign.  ::) She gave it to my shortly after there return. It HAD a long barrel. Who's end was badly corroded. I shopped it to about 22" and used it like that for a while. Then put a bead on it. I screwed that up and cut it again to what it is not and correctly added a front bead. Its label's CHOKE but we all know its CYLINDER!! ;D Shoots slugs pretty good as well, but the leather butt isn't so pleasant with heavy loads.

The forend screw is a standard thread size (1/4-20 or maybe 1/4-24)  You may find a knob in a hardware store droor if you keep your eye's peeled.

You may also find a survivor forend on the classifieds here, if you'd like one.  As for 'gunsmith fitting' well....you don't need a degree in rocket engineering to do it yourslef. (the degree is an option, but not really a requirement ;) )  You put it on your gun.  If it fits, you're done.  If it's too tight, sand a little off.  Too loose, acraglass or other filler and then sand it back.  A little loose isn't a problem as long as the front doesn't fall off when you open the action, which would be a rare case indeed.

I'd look at either finding a knob, or just stick with the pocket screwdriver.  Me, I have a Survivor and a couple of ther Handis.  That's not the cheap way to go, but it's the way many on this board seem to have gone.  Multiple rifles= all the options.

I use the Warne quick-release bases and rings on my muzzleloader ( not a Handi ) and it retains zero. Sure makes it a lot easier to clean with the scope removed and out of harms way!

Keep your eye out at antique stores and such for old (mostly) flat blade short screwdrivers with a thumb screw type head. They easily fit on a keyring or use a small caribiner or ring to use on your hunting jacket, etc. For that matter you could make one out of flat stock or an old 'bottle opener'. It doesnt take much torque for those screws so no nice hardened blades are required.
