I have one in .40S&W and am very pleased with it. It's widely known that the first couple of series of had some issues with brittle striker (firing pin), loose front sites, and some magazine feed issues. All of the issues have been addressed and the latest versions seem to be getting nothing but praises. In fairness to S&W it is not uncommon for the initial runs of new products to experience some growing pains. You may recall the first .40S&W Glocks had a tendency to self destruct due to the chamber design that left a sizable section of the bullet case unsupported at the feed ramp. I'm I'm sure you've heard people say never buy the first year production of a new automobile model, "wait till they get the bugs worked out".
The latest version of the M&Ps can be identified by a stepped rear site, (not slopped at the front) and the striker will be silver not black. I think you will really like the M&P, mine feel great in my hand, points well, and has been absolutely reliable so far.
