Switching barrels on a Savage
« on: November 19, 2010, 06:30:33 AM »
I was ask by a fellow member here to explain how to do it in a post. It`s rally simple, but you must head space properly. With the Savage actions the head space on the barrel is held in place by a lock nut on the barrel. You can get a wrench for the nut and by simply loosening the nut the barrel will screw out of the action. If your putting in a barrel that is chambered with a round that uses the same blot face you just screw in the new barrel, head space it and thighten the lock nut. Idealy you will use go and no go gages, but it can be done with a dumby round you can make by seating a bullet into an empty case. Changeing the bolt face, if needed, is also simple. Simply use an allen wrench to unscrew the back of the bolt. Pull the fireing pin out the back. There is a pin that the fireing pin goes through that holds the bolt face on, and with the fireing pin out you just push it out and the bolt face will come out. put in the proper bolt face and replace the pin. Put back the fireing pin and tighten with your allen wrench and your ready to go shooting. Anyone with some machineal ablity can do it, but if you have doubts about any part of the job have someone with experance show you what to do.
