That the the pick for ATF boss is anti gun seems to be a surprise to anyone is somewhat baffling to me. The whole damn organization (ATF) is anti gun. It's their job.

The  Alcohol  Tobbacco  agency was a doomed out dated Federal Police Force by the 1960s. There was a strong move to do away with  Still smashing Federal gangsters of the 1920s. Then along came the most Anti-Gun group ever from Austin, Texas.  There leader a greedy hate filled left wing New Dealer named Lyndon Johnson. Some of these old left wing New Dealers are still around mostly in the TV news. Back to the gun crabbers. Old LBJ and his gang set out to disarm the citizens of the USA. They even tried to ban the use and ownership of rifle scopes. LBJs band of commies tried to ban all hand loading.  What they did do was pass the 1968 Safe Streets Act the most sweeping gun control act of all times. And guess what, to enforce all this he recovered the old Alcohol Tobacco Tax agency. He added firearms and called it the BATF.  It was birthed as a strong left wing Anti-Gun dream of the Austin New Dealers and has remained true to its founders. If anyone other than an Anti-Gunners ever ran this out fit it would be news.

There is some legiimat epurpose to them, as bootlegging is still a profitable, and currently irresponsible, occupation.   That is about the only legitimate function of the ATF, anymore.   Other than that, I say fire them all. help reduce the deficit.

I think the states could handle the problem of bootlegging without the help of any Federal agency.
The BATF,Department of Homeland Security,EPA FDA,Dept of Education and most other Federal agencies are totally unnecessary, and just bleed and run roughshod over the citizens of our nation.

I do not know how much exposure you have to the bootlegging industry.  I grew up in East tennessee in the 1970s when it was still a very profitable industry, and still is, in many states.    The "Dixie Highway" ran right through my hometown and crossed multiple states on its course from Miami to Chicago, and then to Detroit and the Canadian border.   Bootlegging is still a problem, as there are many distillers who run unsafe operations.    That industry was the genesis of ATF, formed from a group called the Alcohol Tax Unit in the Treasury Dept.

A multistate bootlegging industry does require some type of Federal investigative and enforcement unit.   As for the firearms industry, the ATF is incompetent.  other than bootlegging enforcement, I say we should disband the ATF to save money.
