Looking for Hunting Chaps
« on: November 21, 2010, 06:28:12 AM »
Fellow hunters,

I am looking for a new pair of chaps for hunting and other endeavors.  Currently, I am using either a pair of leather shotgun chaps that were originally for horseback riding or a pair of Browning Upland Chaps that are a couple of inches too short for my legs.   These will be used primarily for Upland bird hunting, (Pheasant, Chukar and Quail) and Deer/pig hunting on the ranch.

I have looked at the different vendors and read people's reviews, and my head is now swimming.  At this time, I am looking at a pair of waxed cotton duck chaps, Either the Filson or the Cabela's Stonewall.

What are your experiences with these and which would you buy?  Being in CA, they will see all kinds of weather, from zero to the 100's

Thanks for the input,

Modoc (Aka Will Leslie)

I have a pair of Filson. Have had others. Since the Filson's; I have never had a need to look for or use others.

From my experience Filson is top quality gear. Lordy it is expensive though. If you are realistic about your needs it can be an economical choice though. Generally I have found the Cabelas branded items are of good to very good quality, and they are pretty good about product warrantee as well.

The older I get the more I appreciate quality. I also have more disposable income too. If you are serious in this bird hunting and have many years ahead I would look very closely at the Filson gear.

What is it they say, buy once cry once?

Thanks Guys!

I will be saving over the summer for a set of Filsons for Next year.  I had forgotten to mention that I have another small issue in that I need a 28"+ thigh and a 30"+ leg.  The Filson seems to be the only pair that actually will fit without major hemming or having them custom made :o

We manage to get out every weekend during quail season here and then about 5-10 times on different game bird clubs during the season, so they will pay for themselves in a year or two.  Nothing worse than ripping up your jeans retrieving a downend bird in the black berries and barbed wire and then having to finish the hunt with ventilated pants.  ;)
