Hey all you 30-06 Handi Guys
« on: November 21, 2010, 10:36:21 AM »
Been thinking about getting an '06 barrel for my handi.  I've had several rimmed cartridge handis (45-70, 30-30, 357, 22 hornet) and had pretty good luck with them.  How's the 06 for accuracy and more importantly extraction/ejection.  Need a lighter long range gun.

I have one and have had good luck with it. Accuracy is OK, not a tack driver but will more than get the job done.  As far as functioniong, no problems what so ever. Very reliable.
Hope this helps;

I have a handi synthetic 30-06 that I had a muzzle brake installed on. I have a disability and thought that if I found I couldn't shoot a rifle at all, I wouldn't be out a lot of money. Everybody was fooled, me most of all. The '06 shoots 1.5 " groups at 100 yds and I love it.

I don't believe there are much in the means of extractor issues since H&R went with the extractor & did away with the ejector. That's just an observation, since I'm relatively new to the Handi hobby.
My guess would be the 30-06 would be an awesome Handi as long as recoil wasn't an issue. I have a .308 and it kicks a bit, so I'd expect the 30-06 would be a bit more severe.
There seems to be alot of choices when it comes to recoil control on the Handis though.

Siamese,

Off Topic reply, but how do you like your 45-70 bolt gun?  I keep seeing Siamese Mauser chambered in 45-70 and I am beginning to want one.  Course I want a 45-70 lever gun also. ;D

I have a 1992 vintage 30-06 barrel on a newer frame and the ejection is fine.  Accuracy is close to MOA @ 100 yards, but mine is a shorty as i chopped it to 18.5".  I usually shoot 165 grain spitzers over IMR 3031.

I had a 30-06 handi for a while. It shot well and there were no problems with ejecting empties. It kicked like hell with 220's too.

I have one and of the non-rimmed Handis we have, it is the best shooter and ejector. If I had to pick one other than a rimmed it would be the way I would go. Mine is an older ejector model it isn't pretty but it will shoot 1" or less at 100. I shoot 125 gr sierra or Nosler ballistic tips. I have killed several deer with it and it is one of the guns on my "don't sell" list. The only time a case has stuck is if I had any case lube left on, (my fault) some of my other handis are moodier. but following through with the fixes listed on the faqs really helps cut down on the stuck cases on the other guns that stuck on a whim. But if you are buying brand new off the shelf, the gun should be a extractor (unless it has been on the shelf a long time).

I have owned a few -06 handi's and loved all of them. All of them were very good shooters, especially the UltraComp's. Ya don't hear much bad bout them, cause they usually are shooters.
