Forearm fit
« on: November 21, 2010, 12:31:17 PM »
For the first time I have a forearm that definitely doesn't fit. I may have had others that weren't too great but, until now, didn't notice. Two thoughts; how does one determine whether or not you have an acceptable fit, and what does varying degrees of less than perfect fit have on accuracy on both rifles and on muzzel loaders?  I have a synthetic MC stock on a black SB-2 frame with a 7mm 08 barrel that locks up tight,,no wriggle, even in the open position. I am using a Survivor forearm and can see a lot of daylight through the frame/forearm joint.   Thanks for any info that can help,    Ken

The forearm fit is a big part of how well a handi can shoot. Actually its nothing specific to a handi, everything that pertains to good shooting form body position to firearm operation, is consistency. A forearm that's too tight will not produce consistent results, same can be said for one that's too loose. Its should fit properly with no undue pressure on the screw or the receiver.

My nephew has a survivor set on his 30-30 handi and it was the same thing with the forearm. You could see a gap between the forearm and the frame. I bought some 2 part plastic putty epoxy and mixed up a small ball of it. I sprayed the frame with Pam cooking spray and stuck the plastic putty to the forearm where it touches the frame. I put the forearm on the gun and tightened it up... the excess putty squeezed out between the frame and the forearm and I wiped it off before it hardened. I let it set up overnight and took the forearm back off. Then I cleaned up the edges of the forearm where the putty was with some 320 sandpaper and that was it. The putty fills the gap perfectly and hardens up like a rock. It's been a year or so since I did it and it's still perfect. It only takes about 10 minutes to do.

I believe theres instructions in the faqs similar to that. Only Devcon putty was placed between forearm and spacer (where it's screwed on) to push the spacer back against the frame. The instructions go on to explain relieving and  bedding the entire forearm to the barrel to help eliminate vibration.

I noticed some movement myself of the forearm and spacer near the frame. There was some movement there if you wiggle the forearm. I just used RTV silicon to stabilize the forearm. Judicious placement of scotch tape on the top of the forearm rails, Sahran wrap on the barrel, some paper stuffed in the gap just above the pivot hinge. Put the RTV on the forearm and put it in place.
This worked great! So later I taped off an area around the forearm screw, and put some silicon there too. Once the screw was in place I put a business card thickness of paper up front and tightend the screw. Let it dry a couple days and ended up with a tight fit at the spacer and barrel/frame mating area, AND, a bigger than normal fit than just an O ring. And I believe the RTV aids dampening any vibration that may occur.

Now add to that, a set screw under the forearm screw, with just enough pressure to feel the RTV contact the barrel, and it's the same pressure/amount of contact everytime.

This kinda goes with another thread here recently about where to place the forearm or frame when bench shooting and/or holding off hand and a change of impact because of this change. With this bedding I have little to no change no matter how I hold. The forearm is bedded to the barrel and immobile. Any changes I make from bench, bag, then to hand holding is much like that of a full stock gun.

He's not talking about bedding a wood forearm. He's got a survivor forearm and there is not separate spacer... it's all one piece of plastic. The curve of the forearm doesn't match the curve of the frame and it leaves a gap between the frame and forearm. I had the same exact thing with my nephew's survivor forearm.

Is this a problem with all of the synthetic forearms.? I was wanting to go to a longer synthetic forearm. Are the new synthetic set forearms the same as the Handi-grip forearms? If a number of forum members have had problems with the Survivor, it makes me wonder if it is a standard problem with all synthetic forearms and what would be a fix for a lot of people's problems.    Ken

The only time I've seen it is with the survivor forearm. The other synthetics seem to fit fine.
