Fit this!
« on: November 22, 2010, 06:43:53 AM »
Some time back I decked out my original 45-70 Handi in Carbine stocks bought here on the classifieds forum.  The idea, as some of you may remember, was to make a "Handy Handi" that I would use primarily with (greatly) reduced 300 gr. 45-70 loads.

Then I got a .410 barrel, again here on the classifieds forum, and it fit the 45-70's action just fine.   ;D  Now I had a set I could carry with me to the farm, just to have a rifle/shotgun... well, handy!   :D

Never one to let well enough alone, I purchsed, yup, here on the classifieds forum, a 30/30 barrel.  But I no longer had a spare action since the last one I had is now mated with a 280 barrel I purchased here on the classif... well you know where!   ::)

So I says to myself, "self" a three barrel set, 45-70/30-30/.410, would be cool!  Pick up a couple a forearms, build a nice case to hold it... heck!  I'd be the envy of the forum!   8)  'sides, I could also dedicate it to the Grandbabies use!

But, alas and alack, the 30/30 barrel wouldn't fit my old frame...  :-\  I was devistated!   :'(  And I couldn't bear the thought of modifying the fit of the barrel.   :(

Time passed, the heartache subsided, and I started looking in the classifieds for another action.  Part of me wanted to try again but I knew I couldn't bear the pain if things didn't come together smoothly.   :-\

Then, like a bolt from the blue it came to me!   :o  It was as if the heavens opened up and a ray of light illuminated the path I was to take!   :o

I had recently purchased a 45 Colt carbine.  No, not from here on the forum!   :D  $199.99 +/- from... where was it Tim?  CDNN?  Anyway, instead of loading the 45/70 way down, I could use the 45 Colt Carbine!   :o  The answer was right there in front of me all the time!  I was just to blind to see!   :-[

Gleefully, but with some trepidation, I flew with wings on my feet to the man cave.  With quivering hands I spun the combination lock then dug out the carbine and extra barrels.  My first thought was that the case colored receiver would add a nice touch to a multi barreled set!   :P  First I tried the 410 barrel, IT FIT! :D  But it had also fit the old 45-70 receiver...  :-\  Would that mean the 30-30 barrel would likewise not fit the Carbine receiver?   ???

Carefully I touched the mating parts of the barrel and the receiver together.  Holding the barrel in my left hand and the receiver stock in my right I attempted to snap the joined pieces shut.

to be continued

This isn't one of those stories someone else picks up and ads a chapter is it? On this forum it will end up being QUITE a read. I just hope it has a happy ending. Just hate the story where a happy reciever is broken up from it's barrel and stock set and left in the cold..... it's Thanksgiving.  :-\

Sorry fellers... I knew I forgot something... gettin old ain't for wusses!   :-[

Now, where I was?   ???  Something about mating...  :-\

OH! OH!  I REMEMBER!   :o  Wait, this is the NEF/H&R isn't it...  ???

Yup... Okay, ... The barrel and receiver locked shut with a SNAP!   ;D  Maybe a hair too tight but solid!  'sides, it should break in nicely with some shooting!  I'm not even worried about smoking the shelf to check engagement.   :)

So, now I can start thinking about casing the set, getting a couple extra forearms, testing to see if I can switch barrels and still hold zero, you know such stuff as that!   :D

Okay, that's it... I'm done... No more Handi's for me...  I mean it this time... I've yet to kill a deer with my 45-120, 45 Colt, 280, 7x57, 25-06 and now the 30-30!   ::)  They accumulating faster then I can develope loads for 'em!  That's it.  I gotta stop.   :(

Nope, no 357 Max, 9.3x74R or 405 for me!  Nope... no sir no way... I'm done...  :P

It's a wonderful tale....it didn't even have a wicked witch or a wolf in it....Just the Happy Handi Fairy.  Richard, I'm trying to make the same decision you are.  My problem is I've got two SB2 frames and 3 stock sets....and no room to store more guns.......Now, if I got a couple more barrels........put a safe in Patty's closet..... ::) :o ::)

Yeah, right! How can you be done, Richard?? I don't see a muzzleloader in that list. Or...........how about that 9.3 X 74 in a real nice walnut:

Joe, you are a cold, cruel man...  :'(

You really think I could fit express sights to a Handi?   :-\   Might make that 45-100 worthwhile for a huntin gun...  :-\  then I could keep the 45-120 for BPCR shoots   :-\

I'm weakening...   :'(

But of course the Express sights would work,or you could mount 2 fold down sights 1 ahead of the other on your barrel and have adjustable sights instead of file to adjust traditional sights on a quarter rib.

Where's the 20 gauge?  Both smooth and rifled, you know.

I built up a rifled 20 gauge for my brother.  With Mag-Tec all brass cases, he fires three .626 diameter balls at just over 1050 fps.  Three!  They weigh 350 grains each.  We just finished the load development, now we are onto accuracy tests.  So far though, the three balls form a clover leaf of 3/4 inch center to center at 15 yards, so we expect good things.  It's his bear rifle and he just loves it.

I don't know if a therapist would help any of this group. Misery loves company and
since it is such a pleasant misery, who's going to complain? The only complaint I
could think of is not enough Handis! The only way to help a Handiholic having an "attack"
(known as withdrawal) is to avoid eye contact and shove a new Handi to them with
a broom. Of course, it should be in the box to avoid scratches. Gee, I feel an attack
coming on right now!! Where is that H&R catalog honey?.... no answer!

I wonder if you could get a 357 barrel to fit along with  that 410 for the kiddos?  Maxed that would sure be a nice thing for  the young folk to learn on and even effective on deer don't ya' know.  Mine fits my 280 and my 45-70 frames.

I'm really looking forward to trying my nice bull barrel 223 out on some yotes later....You got one of them ain't ya?

It's a real pleasure when I take a look at my shotgun combo.  12 ga. 32" full, 12 ga. 28 mod.  20 ga....  410.  All fit my old style receiver with the half cock on the hammer.  You got that combo don't ya?

Just wonderin'

Where's the 20 gauge?

You're right  :-\  I never really had much use for the 410... Always was a 20 ga. man myself...  8)

I know where there are some express sights.........

But of course the Express sights would work,...

Ya know, there's a company that has some nice sights.  NEC or NEF or something like that...  :-\  Wait!  A vision is forming in my mind!   :o  I see a 26 inch barrel, express sights on a quarter rib... 9.3x74R... and and there's a Handi action also!   :o  AND THE WOOD!  AA or maybe AAA grade walnut in classic style with a shadowline cheek piece!   :o  GASP!  I gotta stop and catch my breath...  :-[

I don't think you folks are really helping Richard break his Handi addiction.

I don't know if a therapist would help any of this group. Misery loves company

Maybe we are codependent.

I appreciate the concern boys... Unlike some others here who get their kicks drinking likker infront of a recovering alki-holic, you boys understand what I'm going through and I love you for it!   :-*

I wonder if you could get a 357 barrel to fit along with  that 410 for the kiddos?
Just wonderin'

Ya know Ben, I thought about that but for what the 357 barrels are selling for here in the classifieds I thought I'd just buy a complete rifle and...  :-X     :o     >:(  YOU SEE!  That's what I'm talking about!   >:(  They suck you right in under the guise of idle conversation!   ::)

you ain't done, nope, not by a LONGSHOT!! ;)

You know your mother told you where you would go fo lying!

Okay,  :-\  I give up.   :(  Just like when I tried to quit drinkin and smokin...  :-[  Actually it's kindofa relief!   ;D  Now I can go home, sit down in the man cave, smoke a cigarette and drink a beer whilst I plan out that 9.3x74R in more detail!  And I gotta check Bud's to see what they want for a 357 rifle.  Then I'll have an SB1 action for the 20 GA barrel.   ;D  But I want an SB2 action for the soon to be Max so I'll have to look for one of those actions... HEY!  I just remembered a pawn shop that has a great looking 12 ga on a case colored action!   :o  I need to see if they still have it...  :-\  OH! and...  :-\   :(   :'(      help... me...

Here's mine with the Marbles except I had to remove the elevator to get it dialed in with the stock height front sight.

Express sights: Jeff's Outfitters has some cataloged and the New England Custom Gun (NECG) stuff is nice, and pricey, but nice.
