.327 mag round question
« on: November 22, 2010, 09:59:56 AM »
Could some one educate me about the .327 cartridge. Is this a new cartridge ? Has anybody fired one?
I was recently looking at an SP101 and it was chambered for .327 , price was pretty decent about $425.00
but I shy-ed away not knowing anything about the caliber.

What is the intended purpose of this cartridge ?  -  Home defense?
could it be used effectively as a varmint round?

Would a . 327 Lever action rifle make sense , or a 327 handi ?
Is the .327 intended just for Handguns  -  or is any one manufacturing a rifle chambered in .327?

I'm clueless with regards to this round... educate me Please.

The .327 Fed Mag round is a hotter and lengthened .32 H&R Mag round.  The .32 H&R did not live up to it's potential due to pressures being held down as it was loaded for the H&R 'break top' revolvers.  Those are not as strong as a solid frame revolver is.  You can call it an 'improved' 32-20.  It's a good small to medium game round.  Say good enough power to easily take Javelina or Axis deer but I'm not sure I would not use it for big whitetails, although my father hunted whitetails for years with an old 1873 Winchester in 32-20.  I seems to have enough oumph to qualify as a defensive round for people who are recoil shy and are not comfortable with a .357 mag.  While I don't see any rifles chambered for it yet, I'm sure one of the lever action makers will offer one.  I had a Mag-na-port custom Ruger in .32 Mag and enjoyed it very much.  44 Man

Would it make an effective coyote cartridge?

I am also very interested in this cartridge. The 32-20 Grampa had was great for woodchucks and such. ( My first expirience with never shoot a skunk when it's walking away...)   I loved the .32 H&R in the Single Six I had, ( another wish I hadn't sold it gun)  but haven't seen the 8 shot .327 Federal on the bigger frame. Has anyone played with it yet and what do you thinK?

I have the stainless Blackhawk in 327 and love it. It actually shoots 32 H&R and 32 S&W longs better than factory 327 ammo. I wouldn't hesitate to hunt anything smaller than whitetail with it and it the situation presented itself, I'd use it for a neck shot on a whitetail. It's no different than the 30 carbine or the 32-30 on steroids. It doesn't really fill a gap, it's just something different. It's a small caliber bullet in a rimmed case and again, I love it.

If 'they' would start chambering some long guns in this cartridge it would be a dandy woods loafers load and a reloaders dream; ie, carbide die .32H&R Mag set should work fine. A rifle/handgun combo would be just as sweet now as it was in the old days and be cheap to feed for a handloader. Yeah, it isnt a big game round, but how much of our shooting is at big game?
I still like my 38Spl.s, and 32-20 for these same reasons, but if starting out new I would have to consider this, IF they would make some rifles too.
