can a TC Grey Scout be modified?
« on: November 22, 2010, 05:23:11 PM »
I have a Gander Mountain limited production (131 of 1000) Thompson Center "grey scout'

its kind of a transition gun-it has a hammer (looks like a lever action without the lever)-that drops onto a #11 cap "inline" with the charge. This gun has always been a beach about misfiring but its a neat gun.

is there a way this gun could be modified to have a removable breech plug and use 209 caps? Anyone know of a smith that would tackle it?

thanks!

i have one and have no issues with misfires .a gunsmith buddy and myself have thought about this befor he has one too. looks like you would have to make a diff. breech plug then the hammer would have to be reworked so it would hit the 209 primer . when hunting i all ways drop just a few grain of 3 or 4 f powder in first it has never failed to fire even in the rain. if you find a way to modify the rifle let me know

I have no use for this gun-it is more or less obselete for my needs. Are they worth anything? I'd be intrested in trading it off if it cant be modified.

Have you replaced the nipple? A lot of misfires are due to bulged nipples not allowing the cap the fully seat and when it explodes, a lot of the heat goes right out the side of the cap due to it not being seated.

I doubt they make a 209 plug for it, thats a fairly old design. But you never know

it should use the standard 1/4x28 nipple that tc uses.

the scout rifle and pistol have a special nipple. you might call t. c and see they might still have some parts left for them. if your having trouble putting the cap on  and the nipple has been flatten just sand it back ti size. first take it apart  and give it a good cleaning. only like 5 /6 parts including the stock set. make sure you clean it with the nipple out

There were several variations of Scouts that T/C made. Do you know what the twist rate is for yours? What is the barrel length and  is it round or octagon? Stock set, wood or synthetic? Sometimes you can find a breech plug/nipple on one of the auction sites. As far as I know it would be quite a job to modify it to use 209's.
