savage 24v 222/20
« on: November 23, 2010, 07:30:42 AM »
On a whim I fitted my 222/20 barrel on my 30-30/20 reciever and both barrels fired. The funny part is i tried the 30-30/20 barrel on the 222 reciever and the rifle wouldn't fire --the firing pin hit below the primer

Savages require hand fitting of barrels, same as H&R. Often a different barrel will just snap on and work fine but you can't count on it. It seems your 30/30 barrel set is just a hair longer from pivot pin to breech face so when set into the .222 action the barrels don't fully seat. They are not intended to be interchangeable without fitting. Now that you have switched them back if you'll try the .222 case that you fired on the 30/30 action I suspect you'll find your .222 action will not close on that fired case, it will be a hair long.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

i bow to your knowledge and will try what you say --- I save my 222 brass because I drill out the primer to allow a 204 black powder primer to fit in the case and shoot 22 cal.pellets thru the 222  in the backyard

Hay flash,

I've used several savage 24s but found them heavy & not regulated well.

Years ago they were reasonably priced, but that has all changed. I did like the fit & finish of the 2400 I bought but it was damaged in shipment so the seller took it back. It was shipped insured but in the sellers name so he filed the claim. Some day maybe I'll buy another 2400. In the interim I'll suffer through with my drilling.  ;D

Yes DM, we are in the minority for sure.  :o. I really need to quit letting myself get distracted with all the other projects and just shoot my drillings more. I guess I just like buying guns.  ::)

any 22 caliber center fire  rifle/revolver will work  22 hornet,223 22-250,220swift,222 --but must be center fire
1.using a expended cartridge (or unprimed brass) drill out the base of the brass where the original primer went ( i use  a 1/4" drill bit and then use a hone in my drimel to do the final fitting) and fit a 204 shotshell primer (black powder primer 204)
2get some 22 caliber pellets --I like the gamo raptors for squirrel and small game--
3 the pellet should fit the cartridge case and the 204 primer goes--- well you should be able to figure it out
i don't know what velocity I'm getting but at 30 yards it shot thru a piece of 1/6 pt and it's quiet enough so that my next door neighbor doesn't hear it from less than 100 ft
now back to savages
I tried shooting the 222 like coyote talked about but everything still fit afterward so I guess I just am lucky

P.S. heck you might be able to adapt a 17 remington fire ball to shoot 17 cal. pellets

I always just used a mag primer, and push the pellet in backwards.  It shot plenty good enough for practise for me, and i didn't have to ruin the case.

yeah i dont' save my brass but I have a half dozen 222 and just carry those in my pocket
209 primers really foul up quickly
this system works really well with the savage 24,but my taurus ragin hornet (22 hornet) couldn't generate the same velocity because of the cylinder to barrel gap

Years ago I used a S&W model 15 and those spear plastic 38special cases & wadcutter bullets with a pistol primer to power them for rat control around the old home place in Florida.  ;D. Worked real good on mice but the rats sometimes took 2 shots.
