I am new to the forum and H&R/NEF guns! I have 2 days ago picked up a H&R Topper Mod 158 in 30-30 ( serial # AZ...) and a NEF Pardner in 20 ga mod choke ( fixed). I have paid $ 100 for both guns together, so I guess this is a good deal.... however: The rifling of the 30-30 barrel is worn ( still shoots good though...) Extremely rough lands and pitting and the gun is very hard to open. Lever needs to be pressed down all the way and then gun barely opens! How can this be fixed? Also is there a way of getting a new barrel?
The NEF functions perfect and shoots very well. However it is quite rusty on the outside ( bore is fine) and the buttstock was in bad shape. Steamed most dents out and sanded it. The stock seems to be poplar!? I believe, I can stain and finish in oil..... but the forearm is walnut and seems to be from a gun with a snap on forend and is ill fitting and has the holes drilled offcenter and therefore the stock doesn't fit well! Can I glue in a piece of wood ( dowel) and redrillwhat would be a good stain to match the forend ?
All your help is appriciated!!

you did good on the price.the 30-30 will probably wear in and get easier to open. stocks and forearms are traded on the forum regularly or you can just fill and drill and it will not affect value.Welcome aboard .

Welcome aboard, sounds like ya got a good winter project ahead.  I just got a 158 and haven't played with it, but sure like the lighter weight of the barrel.  DP

Welcome!
Read all the FAQs, then go back and read all the FAQs.
For the 30-30, clean up all barrel/frame contacting surfaces and especially the locking ledge at the barrel breech and the hinge pin/mounting lug. Brass or oooo steel wool the 'frame rails/underside of the barrel, standing breech and barrel breech to make sure there is no hardened fouling. Do NOT use files, sandpaper, or even stones, just get it a cleaned up and see if it improved. If it doesnt, get back to us and we will help you work it out.

Some pics would be of great help if you can post them up to get a better idea of the condition you are describing.

Hang around the Handi classifieds and you'll find a forend for sale. And of course you can file and scrape on the old one to get it fitting, and bed it to the lug.

Please check out the FAQs for forend fitting info.  It made my .243 shoot way better.

I used leather dye on my daughter's stock.  It worked fine.  She now has a purple gun.  Then Lin-speed because I had it.
