I was in shop today looking around at the used gun rack. There are a couple old sporters there. One is a Springfield 30-06 and the other one is a 8mm Mauser K98. They were both owned by the same man and both were sportered over 40 years ago. The work he put into them is amazing. The 30-06 has a beautiful curly maple stock, hand checkered with cherry grip cap and forearm cap. Of course it's action is smooth as silk and it has an old 4x scope on it. The Mauser is beautiful also. It has a black walnut stock, hand checkered and has a cheek swell cut into the buttstock. It also has a ramp front site with gold bead and a fully adjustable williams peep on the rear. It also has a williams side mount scope mount and a perfect old bushnell scope on it. As I said both of them were sportered over 40 years ago and have remained this way since. All in all these are two very well done rifles and most guys would be proud to own them.
Now to the good part... as I'm checking out rifles on the other side of the rack from these two a couple young guys walk in and start looking at the two rifles. I overhear one of them talking about the Mauser and how they are great rifles. Then he goes on to say he's thinking of buying it... his friend says "why". The kid says "I can take it home and tear it apart and sell off the parts"... so it goes he started talking about stripping it and selling off all the parts on gunbroker.
That was enough for me. I walked over to the rifle, said "excuse me" and grabbed the Mauser off the rack. I turned around and handed it to the shop owner and said "could you please put this one back for me Dave?" He gave me a wink and said "I knew that was coming" hehehehe... yeah he knows me.
I told him I'd pick it up next payday... he said "it'll be here"
Apparently the boys didn't like what I had done and started muttering something as they walked towards the door. I think it was something about me being an a**hole or something like that.
Oh well... if it keeps a beautiful old rifle from being torn apart I guess I'll be the a**hole.
I'll post pics of the old girl when I bring it home.
