40-65 Long range potential
« on: November 24, 2010, 10:49:49 AM »
I had in the good old days, a C Sharps 45-90, Browning BPCR's in 45-70 and a Remington Rolling Block in 50-100.  I lost all of them and
a lot more in the enconomic down turn.  I have the chance to buy a Doc White trap door in 40-65.
I am not familiar with the cartridge and would like to know if it is a good long range or at least mid range target round.  I know that at one time it was a popular Creedmore round but how would it work in todays BPCR competitions?

It sure does win a lot of BPCR matches. As long as you have sufficient twist to stabilize big bullets it'll reach out there just fine. If it has a slow twist barrel to shoot the little 250gr. levergun bullets, it is a more short range affair.
"Give me a lever long enough, and a place to stand, and I'll break the lever."

The .40-65 is a great cartridge with good accuracy potential. It has won Gold at the NRA Nat. Matches and on the Silhouette matches.
It is a great mid range caliber and it will make the 1K.

I was really tempted but the rifle being offered is a trap door.  I have heard that their are both accuracy issues and lock wear things to
be concerned about.  I rifle has been built well and is a treat to look at but I just don't want a trap door.
something else will come along, it always does.

DC, the original load for the 40-65 is
* 250gr bullet
* 65gr Fg Powder
* 1420 fps
Good Luck and Enjoy Your Possible New Rifle
Though not shot with black powder, this May a friend was shooting his 40-65 Browning at 1000yds.  For ten shots, all were 8 ring or better with one center hit ... vernier sights
