6.8 spc loads??
« on: November 25, 2010, 01:22:04 PM »
I was wondering if anyone can knock a deer down with this caliber with a shoulder shot? I'm shooting hornaday interlock 100 gr. bullets with 27 gr. of IMR 3031.  I havent found a drop of blood until i get to the deer but they are not going but about 40 to 50 yards. I was just wondering about a different load that somebody is liking without buying a bunch of different bullets because deer season doesnt last but 2 weeks with a rifle.

Thanks for any information

I have 6.8 loads with both the 110 Accubond and the 110 grain TSX bullets.  Haven't shot a deer with them yet.  They are tougher bullets than the Hornady. and I think they would exit.

I shot two mule deer with my 18.6" Robinson Arms XCR-L in 6.8 SPC 1-11" twist spec 11 chambered rifle this fall.

My bullet/load of choice for hunting with this cartridge are the new 95gr Barnes TTSX designed specifically for the 6.8 SPC cartridge I load them in Rem LR primer brass with 30grs H322 & Win LR primers and give a light crimp using a Lee factory crimp die = 2825fps.

First deer I shot was a 2 point mule @ 166 yards bullet entered left side front of chest and exited right side thru rib just behind the leg the second mule deer was appr the same size doe shot was 80 yards bullet hit top of neck just below the head both deer were instant DRT.

I had both of my sons with me older son shot the one he is holding onto.

I feel that due to the lower velocities/bullet weights of this cartridge that appropriate bullets be used when hunting example Sierra P110gr Prohunters are designed for 270 Win velocities and will not expand below 2300fps on soft tissue with a 2650fps muzzle velocity that limits me to a max 125 yards where a 95gr TSX will expand below 1700fps &  110gr Accubond/110gr Accubond will expand down to 1800fps this makes these bullets capable of expanding in soft tissue beyond 300 yards.

I have shot one buck, frontal shot at about 40yds and bullet traversed the length of the deer and was found in the rear ham about 1.5” from exiting – massive blood trail and chest cavity was soup, deer ran about 20-25yds. I have shot 6 hogs ranging from 60-225yds all DRT with the Barnes 110gr TSX.

I load these with SSA small primer brass, Wolf SRM primers, 29.6gr H322 with an AOL of 2.285”. These loads are shot from a RRA mid-length, 1-10” spc II.

good to hear I'm loading the 110gr TSX with 29grs H322 = 2650fps in my 18.6" barrel haven't used them on game yet though was thinking of giving them a try on black bear this spring...

Camp Cook,
I have already worked up some loads with the 110gr. AB’s and need to start working up loads with the 95gr. TTSX……………….just can’t seem to get past the performance of the 110gr. TSX.

How is the young man doing on his shooting skills these days?

We've put his gun away for awhile now got to cold out for him to shoot, he hasn't gotten the hang of aiming it very well yet and just before our last trip I installed a scope but I didn't get a chance to sight it in...   ;D
