Have any of you folks ever seen the Marlin youth model w the 16" barrel. The length of pull is really short but not too hard to get a sight picture. The total length is only 34 " and seems like a great brush or carry rifle when walking far.. What do ya think?

It's kind of an individual decision. I hate too short stocks, but on a light kicking 30-30 (not likely to get the scope shoved back into your forehead during recoil) it might be ok.  Also, you can lengthen the stock with a slip on recoil pad and not add noticeably to the weight, but you would of course increase the overall length very slightly.

The 16" barrel is ok. If you review 30-30 handloading data for 20" and shorter barrels, you loose very little by using a 16" barrel, so that part is OK.

If you want something that is easy to carry, then smaller and lighter are definitely better to  longer and heavier.

Best of luck with your project.
