New to me Buffalo 45-70

Wow, I just won an auction for  Buffalo 45-70.  The wood on this rifle is exceptional.  I didn't realize that
H & R stocked with what I would rate as AA walnut.  This is my first H&R and I couldn't be more pleased!

Congrats, that's indeed a nice one, nice BC stocks aren't exactly rare, while checkered walnut is a nice change from pallet wood, most are rather straight grained and unremarkable, I consider myself lucky to have two out of three that are much better than usual, so getting one that nice is great. There's also a big difference in wood to metal fit and the case coloring on one frame to the next. ;)

A quick question.  Have any of you tried the rifle at 300-600 or more yards?

Not me, the longest range available here is 200yds and I don't go there any more due to their member requirements, so I'm limited to 100yds. I have shot my 45-120 BC at 200yds tho, 525gr Beartooth Piledriver at 1800fps, upper shot is a sighter, the other three after a sight adjustment on the Williams FP-TK.

Did you have a standard 45-70 barrel reamed to 45-120?  I was thinking of having mine reamed to 45-90.  Usually they will shoot both 45-70's and 90's
interchangably just fine.  Bullet seating is the key.  I shot a 45-120 and had a bruised shoulder for a couple of weeks.  I also owned a 50-100 which I loved but when the economy went south I lost it with several other rifles.

Yes, I had mine rechambered by a smith, but it's an easy hand ream, there are several here that have done their own, see my previous post, I edited it to add John Boy's FAQs link.... just in case you read it before the edit. I use my 45-70 BCs for shooting the little 45-70, that's what they're for!!  ;D Read the FAQs, there are several tips to eliminate the brutal felt recoil of the 45-120, specially if you use hot loads.  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php?action=search

Why 45-120 when you can shoot Ruger #1 loads in 45-70 and have all the power one can handle?

Because while 45-70 sounds really cool when you say it, 45-120 just freaks people out!  ;D

Have fun..  Love mine.. try a 300 grain bullet and 35 grains of 3031. Nice plinker load... Easy on the shoulder..

Because ~40kpsi loads in the 45-120 will produce the same velocity as 50kpsi loads in the 45-70, lots easier on the frame.  ;)

And 45-120s fit in a big cigar tube and make 45-70s look tiny; its a cool thing, trust me (or ask BB).
