first 45-70 kill
« on: November 26, 2010, 02:19:51 PM »
i hail from michigans shotgun only zone and have never hunted deer with a rifle until i went to the rifle zone up north. the only gun i took was a 22" 45/70 handi shooting hornady 325gr ftx's with iron sights. i got laughed at by all the other guys in camp with $2000 rifles because of my half wood half synthetic crooked forearm $150 single shot.... but little did they know... long story short we were on a deer drive and an 7 pt tried to sneak out the backdoor where i was posted up at with some arrogant guy with a .300 winmag. when he popped out i immediately ranged him at at 189yds, i pulled up my gun to shoot and the guy said he would take the shot because there was no way i could shoot that far with iron sights, so he lined up and took the shot and missed, the deer had no clue what was going on . so i pulled up figured in about 8" drop and pulled the trigger...bang flop.... ive never seen a man so humbled in my life... chalk one up for the handi rifle and for the 45/70

Oh, I would have loved to have been there with my Handi 45-70!  Obviously, (as most Handi-holics know) it's the mechanic, not the wrench that gets the job done.

Well done man, well done.

I got my first this year with a 45-70 handi too... my buddy said he knew when I shot because unlike all the other echos mine was "all brute"  :D

are you handloading it yourself yet?  that makes it way more fun (and it's hard to wear out straight walled cases too).

Way to show em'.  Tell those fella's that if they ain't got the money to practice shooting, they should buy a cheaper gun, (Handi), and more ammo.  All the gun in the world won't help if you don't know what to do with it.....

Good job!

Congrats. Love it when you tell or in your case show, why you carry a single shot.
Way to go.

Good story and a heck of a great shot Zach!
I agree with mechanic, I believe they would be better off to sell their $2000 dollar rifles, buy a handi and a decent scope and spend the rest on ammo or reloading supplies and learn how to use the single shot.
Congrats on your first 45-70 kill!

GOOD SHOOTING!

thanks all, its all due to practice practice practice, i put 2 full boxes thru the gun before the season started at ranges from 25 yards to 225 yards and i am confident out to 225 with the gun. again its all about practice, you cant shoot your gun 2 times before the season starts to check its zero and call it quits, i owe it all to the gun its very very accurate and when you put 325grs thru a deers boiler room it isnt going far

Beware the man who uses a single shot.  He knows how to use it.  And Zacky has shown that he knows how to use it.

That was a great shot, and I'm proud of you.....especially for putting one of those "Super Magmum" boys down.  People here, and in other forums keep wanting to tell me the .45-70 is "only a hundred yard rifle".  Well, B.S.  It rivals my .308 in long distance performance.  Ya just gotta know yer drop.  I love mine, shoot it often, and know where it's gonna hit.  I really can't explain it, or put it in words, but it's just a pick up the rifle, hold over, and shoot.  It's an instictive thing.  Sort of like shooting a long bow.  I haven't shot mine outside of 300 yards, but anything inside that is History....meat in the freezer.
