Help me choose an AR10
« on: November 27, 2010, 05:24:50 AM »
Hey guys. In the market for an AR10. Im looking for one in a .308 20in bull barrel and free floated hopefully. I want a twist rate that will stablize 150 grain bullets well. I also would like one that I can change out the uppers easily and that have readily available uppers in different calibers. I would like to spend $1500.00 or less. suggestions guys?

I don't have a ton of experience with the AR10 platform, but a friend has a Rock River and it is excellent.  Depending on how it is equipped, it may be out of your price range, though.

I have a Rem. R25 in 308. its a tack driver but a heavy tack driver. I personally have not seen one though that was as light as i would like but I'm spoiled to bolt actions.  ::)

Oldshooter, I agree about the weight.  Every AR10 I've ever handled is a beast.  I think the bolt and carrier weighs nearly 2lbs!  Makes me like my standard M4 so much more.

DPMS , every one I know who shoots one says its a tack driver. With other brands one guy says its great another has a problem. BTW I don't own one - 308 or DPMS . I went 6.8spc. in an AR and Springfield M1-A in 308. So I have no dog in the fight.

Sportsman's Warehouse has got a sale on the Bushmaster 16 inch for $799. The stainless bull barrel with free floating forearms were going for $1100. I did a lot of looking on the AR15 forum and they seem to avoid the Rock Rivers. BTW, the RR takes the FAL magazines where the other 308 AR's take the Knights pattern mags .Magpul seems to be making great mags for about $20 a piece.

Well then you will be green , its old enough to be built with surplus TRW parts and a NM bbl and sights . It was $800 and change years ago when I got it. Trouble is my old eyes have a hard time seeing thru. that NM rear sight . Guess its time to look for a scope and correct mount.  :)

I have a DPMS LR-308B it is a tack driver and like mentioned before they are heavy.  Slickest did you ever settle on what to get?

Get a DPMS LR 308.  Yes, DPMS makes this rifle in other calibers also.  It is heavy, but then you want a bull barrel.  I love my rifle and bought it when they were running in the high $900 range.  Magazines were expensive, but I see they are now reasonable.  You won't regret buying the DPMS rifle when you take the plunge. ;D
