Buy a bubba'd Enfield?
« on: November 28, 2010, 01:15:39 AM »
Saw a $65 1942 US Property Enfield in the shop yesterday. The gun seemed intact except

No mag

Someone had whacked off part of the forearm at a 45 degree angle. No refinishing, just sawed it off. As a result, there are no handguards, barrel band, front swivel, front cap, etc. The forearm wiggles.

I tried to remove the bolt to look down the bore. I did not realize that the rear sight needed to be flipped, so I did not get the bolt out. The store gunsmith could not figure this out either. Probably as a result, we could not close the bolt after. They are attempting to resolve this.

I paid my $65 OTD and will pick it up the next time I stop by.

Doing some internet research, it seems like a $30 mag, and probably another $75 of wood and metal would restore the original look of the gun.

The sights seem to be there, the barrel is full length, the screws seem OK. Buttstock seems original, and the shiny buttplate which I thought was weird, seems original too.

I am amazed at the availability of Enfield parts out there.

Would you put it back together, or would you attempt to make it a better sporter (mag, front swivel, stop forearm from wiggling)?

I guess you are talking about a P-14  30-06. In that case there is no magazine. Are you saying that the floorplate and follower are missing? P-14s are a lot of work to sporterize. the action will always be big and clunky unless you remove the rear sight base which is not easy. I would either leave it about as is . Shorten the bbl, and use it for a behind the seat gun, or restore it to it's military condition.

wreak:  good find.  Great price.  Get two mags check the Shotgun News - I think there are places that make them much less expensively.  Sporterize it.  There are aftermarket synthethic stocks that look pretty good and can be bedded and I'm sure that Fajan still makes their classic sporter stock for the No4.  Check the rifling and the last inch or so of the barrel for muzzle dings and corrosion - if she has a clean tube you can probably get groups less than 1" at 100 yds.  If the barrel needs work, those last two inches are often removed and the barrel recrowned.  I have the same rifle, purchased in 1967 for $19, sporterized then and it still groups about 3/4' at 100 yds with VhitaVuori loads.
