Can I hook TWO positive and TWO ground wires to one car speaker?
« on: November 28, 2010, 06:17:18 AM »
Basically I have an old truck with just two speakers. My aftermarket stereo has 4 speaker outputs. Can I double my wattage to the speakers by hooking up 2 positive and 2 negative wires to each speaker as long as they are all the same channel? Or will I end up with problems? Thanks

Sure........you can do it, BUT it won't work well. The reason is sound output devices, like radios, CD players, etc., are impedance matched. When you hook two separate channels to one speaker it screws up the impedance (AC resistance) matching. In addition if your four channel output is four channel stereo, things really get messed up!
Just pick one set of channel wires up to one speaker (temporarily) and try it to see if the sound is acceptable. If not, try another pairing.

not only will the impedance cause the sound to be off, but it could cause the output of the amp (either built in or aux) to burn out a channel.
