any tire recomendations/
« on: November 28, 2010, 06:41:28 AM »
I have an arctic cat 500 4x4 and use it on trails and snow and some hard road travel.  I don't get into the mud that often but don't want a tire that will fail me if I do.
I am looking to trade or sell my quad when I find a deal on a two seater, but in the mean time I need new tires.  I have been shopping online and am overwhelmed by all the choices there are for tires. What is a good tire that is tough, will not wear out quickley and will not break the check book?

Not cheap, but ITP 589's are my choice. I hear they work well in snow as well.

I prefer and have run a lot of miles on Kenda Bearclaws.  They hold up well and perform better than any other I've used for all around use.  Work well in the mud and still handle well on hardpack.  Most 589s are very heavy and hard compound and are about half again as much money.  Mud Lites are very soft and don't last long at all on hardpack and also seem to puncture easier.  I've had poor luck with Carlisle of any design and not a lot better with Interco.  What ever you get needs to be 6 ply for your size machine.  Check the link below.

ive had good luck with bighorns. Be careful about going to aggressive with a tire. The mud tires on my grizzly are great in mud and snow but make the bike real squirrly at spead on a hard packed trail.

I have been running Goodyear Mud Runners for several years now, both in mud and the rocks of the Tx hill country. I am very pleased with them.

Those look almost identical to my itp 589's. The only draw back to the ITP's is that they are hard! can run with little or no air pressure. A litle rough on hard ground but unstopable in mud!

Funny you mention the no air thing.  With 589s and the Carlisle Swamp Pros I would blow them up to about 30# or so to make sure the beads were seated and after they were on the machine I would leave it jacked up while I removed the cores and allowed the air to equalize, replace the core and go ride.  Put a 6" cut in on of the rears on a pleasure ride in Harlan Ky. once and didn't know it until I got home.  Rode over 300 miles that weekend and have no idea when it happened.

I use Super Swamper tires on my Honda but they look identical to the ones in the picture above.  New tires really make a difference.  I only run about 4lbs of air in mine.

I went with the Discount Tire Trailfinder.  Four tires mounted for 325.00   I have to put slime in them and try them out.  I found that there are too many choices when tire shopping and I had too just choose a set.  These seemed to fit the situation, and I hope the perform well.

We have about six inches of snow here, I rode yesterday in the snow and along the road where the plow piled up the snow and was impressed.  Ive plowed snow and noticed a big difference there also.  My old tires were bald so anything would be better.  I really like how the tire is beefy around the rims and the side walls seem to be pretty tough too.

Notice any similarities between this bear claw and what you bought?  You'll be fine.
