375 RUM finally finished
« on: November 28, 2010, 07:28:17 PM »
I finally finished my 375 RUM. Started out with a rust bucket 8mm Rem mag. I put the lightest contour 375 barrel on it I could find, just happened to be an older Shilen barrel my buddy had at his shop. Got it all snapped together and did a little playing around to get it to feed really well, parkerized it and put it in a High Tech Specialties stock. Weighed in at 7 pounds 14oz with the scope and around 6 1/2 with the scope detached.

Recoil isn't too bad, the vias break is very effective. It is noticably more with the scope detached, I guess that extra pound and a quarter makes a pretty big difference .

It has XS sights peep/bases with standard williams ramp front with fiber optic bead and windowed hood. I had to pin the hood in place cause it kept falling out during recoil.  Accuracy with the peep is really good and dialed in just a smidge high at 100 yards.

Scoped it with a Nikon manarch 3-9x40 with BDC reticle. I will probalby eventually replace this with a 3-9 ziess conquest but for now its working out great, light, and the BDC reticle works out pretty good with the ballistics of the 375 RUM with 270gr TSX @ 2950fps.

Looking forward to spring, hopefully can get a nice bear with this rifle.

here is a closeup of the XS sights peep/base.  I'm really impressed with this setup.  The dot within a circle, within a circle is really quick and accurate.  The fiberoptic bead is centered in the front hood, the front hood is round and windowed,  the front hood is just slightly smaller than the ghost ring when viewed thru the ghost ring.  so it makes a circle, within a circle, with a dot in the center.  Its hard to describe but really handy in practical use.

Nice job Bear - a 270 gn slug at 2950'/sec is a whopper.  Hope you get a chance for a bear with that rifle - show us pictures if you do, 'cause that rifle definately looks like it could.....

Very nice...  What is your barrel length?

I've done something like you and thought about going with the same ghost ring scope base as you but decided that the ring would be so low that I would have to jam my check to hard into the stock to get it to work for me.

The changes I did to my Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM = had the barrel shortened to 21" and installed a NECG Masterpiece banded front sight and the tallest fiber optic front post/blade that they have available, I installed Leupold QRW bases and mount my Leupold VX3 4.5-14X B&C reticle scope with QRW rings when I remove the scope I install a XS Sights tall Weaver backup ghost ring sight I glass bedded the action and adjusted the trigger to 4lbs I didn't want a brake so went with a Kick-Eez recoil pad.

I have the scope sighted in with 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps (I can only get this velocity using RL17 powder in this short barrel) the second B&C reticle line down is dead on @ 460 yards...

I have the ghost ring sight sighted @ 50 yards and would shoot big game out to 200 with the same zero with 350gr Barnes TSX @ 2450fps I reduced the load from 2520fps was just too much recoil for a fast follow up shots if I ever needed it and I load 300gr Gamekings/Partitions/A-Frames to 2730fps and use RL17 powder for all bullet weights.

Here are a couple of pics of my 375RUM...

s

Different scopes I was trying Burris 1X, VX3 2.5-8X B&C and the only scope I now use on this rifle VX3 4.5-14X B&C and I keep the ghost ring sight and a small screw driver to install it in the pouch on the butt stock....

Here is a pic of the 350gr TSX shot at 50 yards the lower hole was my first shot when I was sighting the ghost ring in I adjusted the rear ghost ring sight and the next 3 shots made one cloverleaf hole ghost ring sights are more accurate than most think they are.

Its a 24" barrel.  I put the brake on it because without the brake the muzzle rise was pretty severe.  after the break it comes straight back so you dont lose your sight pictures as bad.  It also cuts down on the recoil quite a bit.  What does your rifle weigh?  Good looking rifle.  I'll have to pick your brain about some of your reloads.   That 350gr TSX load looks like a winnner.

Its actually not half bad using the xs scopebase/sight combo,   I put a taller ramp on it and scewed the sight out about as far as I could before it hit the scope.  I too find the accuracy to be really good with the ghost ring sights.

This is my second Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM I sold my first one that had a 26" barrel to a buddy right after I finished this one and saw that with RL17 powder was giving me almost exactly the same velocities as I was getting with the longer barrel so also have my standard powder loads if I remember right I used IMR4530 & RL22 in the long barrel.
