The Devil is trying to make me do it!
« on: November 29, 2010, 02:53:54 AM »
I've got a little devil that sits on my left shoulder and a little angel that sits on my right.  They both whisper in my ear.  The devil keeps telling me that if I took my .45-70 barrel, cut a dove tail in it, put a ramrod thimble in it and a Huntsman forearm and rod on it nobody would know ::)  He says "It'd be great for muzzleloader season".  The angel is almost shouting "Pete, don't do it." ;D ;D  This is just one of the dangers we face as Handiholics.

It's a cool idea even if you didn't sneak it out during the mz season. It'd be a modern day Shikari. :)
I say build it.

It'd be great on an ejector barrel, you could knock out the stuck cases very "Handily".

The thoughts probably crossed many peoples minds. Have you thought about working up some black powder loads or did I just give your devil another idea.

Although for the first time in 36 years of hunting I had a DEC agent check my license and tags last Friday. The thought of a hefty fine and not being able to hunt keeps me listening to the angel.

been there,......that  ::) ::) :-*, and I have to wonder...... since I am shooting a single shot, cast bullet load, at approximately 1500 fps, and the ML hunter is shooting a sabot loaded with a partitioned, jacketed, boat-tail bullet loaded to approx 2200 fps, just how is he handicapped?? Personally, I think they should just make it a "primitive hunting season" and allow any single shot weapon chambered for a cartridge that was originally designed for black powder.

It is best to stay within the law. At my old age, if I lost my hunting license for one year I would not know if I am still around in another year. I have been checked by many game wardens over the years. Couple of years ago one of them was a realy aggrevating game cop. He searched my vehicle and ask more questions than he should have and I got mad and told him. Here is my hunting licence and it got everything on it you need to know.
So why are you badgering me. I reported him to his office for being offensive and malicious.

My hunting season is over for this year and I got a young doe and a  nice buck with my 6.5x284.

Why not have a .45-70 barrel drilled and tapped for a breach plug? Here is an example of what can go wrong. In Nebraska where I live, last week there was a story in the Sunday paper about a father and his sons that shot the highest B&C scoring buck in the state ever and if memory serves the 6th highest all time national B&C. I read the story about how they happened upon it and I did not even think about how they hunted it. One of the sons either shot and missed or could not get a shot at it and called his dad and told him where it was. The dad got the other son and they covered the paths that the deer could get out. If memory serves me the brother of the first one to spot the deer shot the buck. Now this morning at work I here one of my coworkers talking about how game and parks is investigating the shoot. You see it is illegal to use radio's and dell phones to hunt deer. If they are convicted, not only will they loose there hunting rights for a year , and pay a fine and replacement cost of the buck, but there has been an offer of $250,000 for the head, "most likely Cabela's " and that $250k would go to charity or the parks dept. if this keeps going the way it looks like it is going. Sometimes it is better to just obey the rules.

Sounds like the game cop sensed some resentment.  Once, I was fishing at Cape Hatteras during a pretty good Striped Bass bite when an agressive F&G cop was checking liscences and searching coolers.  I saw him coming to my vehicle, I just tossed him the keys, said, "when you're done just bring me the keys - the fish are biting".  He tossed them back, and said, "thanks anyway", and went on.

How about making a chamber insert like the push in breach plug that H&R used to use?  Then it would be a muzzel loader.  Larry

Another way, if it is legal, would be to use black powder, load it from the muzzle like the turn of the century target shooters did with their rifles. Check out  some of the old Pope Rifles, and Schutzen (sp?) they used a false muzzle to load the bullets from the muzzle and attained some very nice accuracy, or just buy a Huntsman barrell and forearm and go hunting totally legal.  ;D

just did a little research, straight from the Miss DNR website:

"Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of those type rifles; and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading, shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges.  Cartridges may be loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. Scopes of any magnification are allowed on primitive weapons.

So looks like it is legal. You may want to point this out to your local rep. and see if you can get the laws changed in your area.

I really have no need to listen to the devil.  My .50 Huntsman wears the MU breech plug and shoots as reliably as my .45-70.  The load I use hits about 4 inches lower at 300 yards than the '70 with 405s.  No great problem there.

I go along with Fred on this.  I don't want to lose any part of hunting that I might have left, just ain't worth it.  Pete, you just tell that ol' devel to chill out or you'll turn Patty loose on em. ;D  Fred, Congrats on your success, I didn't drop the hammer until the second to the last day on deer.  Never did see an elk I could shoot, none in the area's I could pull the trigger and herds of em around my cabin where I didn't draw a permit. :'(  That's ok, only 332 days left till deer and elk huntin' starts. ;) ;D  DP

I have a 45-70 Shikari, used it heavily for a couple of years during regular gun season.  I was asked at least 50 times why I carried a ML during rifle season, did I think I was Jim Shokey?  Always threatened to carry it during ML season, just raised better, I guess.

Yes they can...........single shot breech loading rifles.  I think they can even use the Encore.  Got us folks in Louisiana envious.  We are limited to 38 caliber or larger, and the single shot breech loading action had to be designed before the 1900's or somewhere there abouts.  X's out the Encore and my Handi 357 maximum.  Man, if that barrel was just stamped 38 special! ;D

According to evidence rules, Mr. Game Warden can confiscate anything used in commision of the crime as evidence. If he is a mean S.O.B that could mean your truck also. He is under no obligation to make sure you get home.

Cool idea- could in worst case senario cost you the rifle, your hunting rig, and hunting rights. Oh and this could make you a convicted felon so you could lose all gun rights. Poaching and thats what it would fall under (possibly depending on state and judge).

That is of course the worst case scenario. Sorry for the OMG the sky is falling the world is ending...

Besides I know no one here would do the unethical hunt thing. This is just merely a conversation with a what if scenario attached.

I don't have a serious ethical issue with this. ML season is simply the state's way of selling ML deer tags. And in my state/zone, where you pay $21 (resident) or $140 non-resident for an extra week at the END of the season, there are not so many buyers. That said, part of the fun is in how many different ways you can do the same thing. Hoping to pick up a crossbow after the season (and CHRISTmas bills). Does H&R makes one of them yet?

Yes, the Encore can be used in PW season here in Ms.  The only single shot that cannot be used is the Ruger No1 as it doesn't have an exposed hammer.  Just give La a little time, our regs started out the same as yours but have been relaxed.  If it keeps going, Ms will simply have a "deer" season from Oct 1- Jan 31.  No separate bow or PW seasons, just use whatever you want.

I've got a 357 mag chamber adapter for my 12 gauge pardner. I use it to shoot roundballs out of my shotgun sometimes.
I put a primed 38 special case in the adapter and chamber it. then I pour 60gr. of Pyrodex down the barrel and load a .715 patched round ball on top of it. I don't know how fast it's going or anything but it blows the hell out of a cinder block. It's pretty neat to play around with.

Tom, thank you, but hold your fire.  I've got lots of MLs to choose from....and not, I aint gonna do it.  The great temptation is to take out the .38-55.  Man, I really want a deer with that.

I put a primed 38 special case in the adapter and chamber it. then I pour 60gr. of Pyrodex down the barrel and load a .715 patched round ball on top of it. I don't know how fast it's going or anything but it blows the hell out of a cinder block. It's pretty neat to play around with.

Spanky

Spanky, you're very friendly and frankly nuts...but what a crazy thing to do.  Now ya got me thinking ::)  What would the .45-70 do with a front stuffed round ball ??? ??? ???  Very interesting.

Yeah I don't really know how safe it is that's why I don't put much powder in it. I only put in enough powder to fill the adapter (it takes 60gr.) I don't think it'll blow up... but I have been wrong before. :-\ :D
