Pete,

Search the NEF/H&R Muzzleloader forum, there is at least one member shooting round balls out of a 45/70. If my memory is correct he has used both BP substitute and smokeless powders. I have shot 45 cal. MZ conicals out of my 45/70 shorty using BH209 and Pyrodex. I used a primed 45/70 case cutoff at about 1" as my "breech plug". I loaded about 70 grains by volume of the powder, enough to keep the conical in the rifling. Loaded the powder and patch & conical from the muzzle end and seated with a ramrod. Went bang and hit the target, didn't shoot it enough times to really know much about accuracy potential. Recoil was trapdoor level. Smoke was nice!

A 'sub-caliber' powder chamber is not a new idea at all.......very efficient actually.
BTW, have you seen the 'golf ball guns'?

There is a device available to convert an AR15/M-4 into a golf ball gun. Uses a 5.56 mm blank. I wonder if it meets current PGA rules?

I never saw much sence in whacking a little white ball as far a you could hit it and then follow it, hit it again and again and again and keep following it. I'd rather spend that time in a trout stream or the woods hunting. I'm not much on NASCAR or professional sports either. The sports are misnamed. They are games. The sports are hunting and fishing.

I thought about that after I posted, But I'm not a golfer, so! I ascribe to George Carlin's view that golf courses and cemataries should be combined to take up less space, and it would make the game of golf much more interesting.

I only mentioned it because fore is one of those terms everyone knows, but few, including myself, have a clue why golfers use the term, I knew the spelling difference, but didn't know the history, so I had to share.

FWIW, I don't watch sports of any kind, but golf is interesting to watch occasionally for some reason, I've played on a par 3 course a few times, and 18 holes once with a bunch of old guys at work 30 years ago, but never had my own gear, just rented it, playing on cemetery grounds would be akin to putt-putt golf which was always fun!!

In Wisconsin for gun deer I think the regs specify 'a single projectile' and not what it is made of......and, yes, if you hit a deer with it Im sure it would be 'a hole' in one.
I used to turn on golf if I wanted a nap; it would put (putt?) me to sleep pronto, but these last couple of years it seems they have really improved the way they present it all and keep it moving. So much for my nap.

The first deer I ever killed was with my tirty tirty about 50 years or so ago. The doe ran about 50 yards, went over a stone wall into an overgrown cemetary. I got her out after breakfast, but forgot my golf clubs.

Back to the original subject, I have thought about a short barreled 308 in a backpack.When on stand having a torque driver along and removing iwther the slug barrel or the muzzle loader barrel and torquing onthe centerfire. As I said I have only thought about this. Just one of the things the mind wanders to when setting on the deer stand.
