I don't deny that we need security, and apparently we don't have it now.  Whoever broke silence did commit treason.  What I fail to understand is, now that it's all out it just verified a lot of other theories that have been out there for a while but were given no credibility and were tossed aside as crazy conspiracy theories.  Now the truths out.

I understand what you're saying but every bill they pass even if for the greater good will have casualties and people will unintentionally get hosed by it.  This leak wasn't so much about the troops, it was about the two faced diplomats and politicians and it's fine with me if they get what's coming to them.

I hope so too. I'm just not willing to go down with them for the enjoyment of some fool in Australia.

We spy on everybody and everybody spies on us---it must be done---MUST BE.
In my estimation, one who leaks information that they swear not to reveal are guilty of treason and should be execuited.

I agree in this case. That private that gave the state secrets away faces a maximum  of 58 years in prison. I think people who do this kind of thing should be executed.

TM7, the sheer volume could elevate classification if the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.
And not all who leak documents are truth tellers, particularly when they knowingly only possess a part of the whole picture. Then they're touting a straw man as a whole truth with an agenda to harm. Very unethical for a truth teller, especially when the actual truth possessors are morally and legally bound to silence. That sounds more like the actions of a campus activist, which is identical in nature to a frat boy, just targeting a different set of coeds.

It ain't all government documents.  Wikileaks is currently preparing a major release on the banking industry:

http://blogs.forbes.com/andygreenberg/2010/11/29/an-interview-with-wikileaks-julian-assange/

Basically, Wikileaks is a website that fights against secrecy.  That could be secrecy by governments, corporations, or any other group.  The world didn't know the creature they created when the internet is born.  It's a genie that can't be put back into the bottle.  People who used to accept it as a given that information could be kept under a lock and key are learning that in today's age, it's not possible.  People WILL found out.  That information will be made public, and once it's out there there is no retracting it.

Governments and corporations are going to have to learn to be behave, because people ARE watching.  No more back room "wink and a nod" deals.

There's a saying amongst many in the techy/computer sector: information WANTS to be free.  It's like water flowing downhill, or lightning seeking a tall object.  In the modern age, information will inevitably free itself from secrecy.

I would love to see information leaked on wall street especially when it comes to those that received bail out money in relationship to the amounts they give to political campaigns.  It would blow your mind how corrupt it is.  Citigroup is a fine example of what I'm talking about.

the state department look like a bunch of clowns-which they are-when anyone can get hold of this info. What is more interesting is that he's accumulated tons of emails from our financial institutions-THAT should be interesting. Release is for early 2011.

On Fox news this morning it came out that financial information about banks and drug companies "memos", will be released in 2011. It will be interesting if this causes an old fashioned run on the banks. Certainly it will cause more
government distrust.
Wiki leaks site has been hit by "hackers", read CIA, with denial of service attacks.

Wiki leaks site has been hit by "hackers", read CIA, with denial of service attacks.

It's doubtful that it's the CIA.  The last leak has already made it's way onto Bittorrent.  It doesn't need the main Wikileaks site to spread anymore.  The next big release isn't due for a few months.

Right now there's not anything particularly valuable to be gained from visiting the main site.  It'd be like dropping tear gas into a baseball stadium when only the cleaning crew was around.

The DoS attacks are likely just a script-kiddie having fun.  There's not much that can be done as technical measures to stop this sort of stuff.  What doesn't spread via web can just as easily be spread vis P2P systems.  Either the more open stuff like Bitorrent, Gnutella, or Ed2k, or if they really tried to crack down then the encrypted and anonymous networks like TOR or FreeNet.

It's become borderline impossible to keep information from spreading these days, which is why you see instead smear campaigns.  The best you can hope to do is to discredit or turn public opinion against Wikileaks.  That's where the CIA's involvement likely is.  Trying to stop the information from spreading at all is a fool's errand.

10 years ago, Al was worth around $1 million. Which these days is chump change. He made a very well timed investment in Google (and Apple, etc). Now he is worth more like $200 million. Whether that makes him a visonary or just really lucky, who knows. I am sure that he thinks that he is pretty damn smart.

If anything, I can see these leaks exposing the lies and hypocracy of our politicians.  All this did was get all the secrets and lies both good and bad out in the open for everyone to know.  Maybe if this happens more often people in our government will remember that we live in a time without secrets and that we're accountable to the voters who put us in.   I don't see this endangering our troops because there's no secret that we're at war.  If the leaks were giving away the plan of attack the night before that'd be one thing, but we've been overseas for almost 10 years now, what exactly is so secret about that?

Some don't seem to realize that there are reasons, very credible reasons, for security classifications.  We held the nuclear science information for as long as we could after the detonations over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and for very good reasons ! MacArthur didn't spill the beans about his planned  invasion at Inchon, during the Korean conflict...only made sense. Reagan didn't blab his mouth over the Grenada operation..although some stupid congressmen did. Still, those congressmen were such an &%#@, that nobody took them seriously...till too latefor the communists trying to claim Grenada.
Geo H W Bush didn't 'telegraph' his strike at Panama.  Even today, we don't tell everybody exactly hao many weapons and of what type, we provide for our dependable allies either.
To think for one minute that everything on a national level should be completely transparent, is a juvenile view. Transparency often is of no benefit anyway..millions of us told voters that Obammy is a phony..but still, the bigger half of voters were completely fooled !  ;) :D ;D :P

As a follow up to my comment earlier about it making no sense for the CIA to perpetrate the DDoS attack - the hacker (who goes by the handle "the jester") who was responsible for the DDoS attack on Wikileaks has been caught and arrested:
