The 50/90 for long range? Tell me some stories please.
« on: December 11, 2003, 10:15:23 AM »
I'm new to the Graybeard site but I have been shooting for awhile.

I'd like to ask the board their expierences with the 50/90, shooting either black or smokeless loads at long range.

It is my hope to build a 1000 yard rifle using this cartridge.

Any help or stories would be of interest. The more detail, the better.

Thanks, good afternoon,
Forrest

well when i had mine!!!!!! i had a 50-90 in a rem. rolling block with a heavy barrel put on by montana rifleman. really tight bore. had globe front site and a buck horn laddersite! never did try any black powder but tried a couple of smokeless! first was acc.3100 62gr.s with a 635gr. gas check bullet coming out at almost 1200 f.p.s. the recoil was no worse than a 45-70  or about the same and it was very accurate. I had shot it enough to know where that bullet was going to hit at 800 and 1000, could hit the steal targets 3 out of 5 (most of the time),,, then i went to something with a little less recoil, 15gr.s of unique with the same bullet and that one came out at just over 1100 fps. very comfortable recoil and just as accurate. It had seem to take the heavier bullets a little better.

Wener,

W: Well when i had mine I had a 50-90 in a rem. rolling block with a heavy barrel put on by Montana Rifleman..

F: This will be on the Pedersoli Sharps but I plan on the 20:1 Rifleman barrel. I already have two of my long range rifles equipped with their barrels and they have the proper twist for any long, heavy bullets in the big 50.

Rifleman seems to make all their barrels on the tight side. My 45/70 is 0.4575 and the 44/63 is 0.4272. Do you recall what size your 50 was? Was your barrel the 1:20 twist?

W: Smokeless was AA3100 62grs with a 635gr gas check bullet coming out at almost 1200 f.p.s. the recoil was no worse than a 45-70 or about the same and it was very accurate... I went to something with a little less recoil, 15gr.s of unique with the same bullet and that one came out at just over 1100 fps. very comfortable recoil and just as accurate.

F:  Thanks for the post. I hope to have this rifle shooting by the end of spring so as to shoot it a bit and the enter it in the Montana 1000 Yard Buffalo Rifle Championship coming along in July.

Good evening,
Forrest
