No one can be driven to God . They must come on their own. We can only pray for them and set a good example. Ansewer their questions. Centries of hell, fire and brimstone messages from "christians" coupled with out right torture from established religions has proven this. Those who seek will find and be rewarded !

Lastly, I can never understand why folks get so upset over religion. Live the best way that you can find. If you are right and end up in heaven good for you, if there is no heaven then you still lived a good life, and if your choices land you in hell it was by your own doing and no ones fault but your own.

Lets throw abortion into this discussion and you'll see just how many people disagree with this aspect of what you said......

tm. Not to know him will be unhealthy for your soul.  ;D You are really good at putting words in peoples mouths. I never sqaid that Matt or you were promoting aetheism. Matt was staing his opinion, you on the other hand promote islam, which I reckon really is promoting a non belief in the real God.  Your changing words in text is expected of you, but when you get caught you whine like a little girl.
How many different people post using your name, or handle??? Several I bet. The theme is the same, hate America, Bush, Christians, Jews and Israel, but always trying to make muslims look good no matter how attrocious they get. Too many different writing styles and different words to all come from you, if I'm even posting to you, ya never know which tm you are talking to, if at all. POWDERMAN.  :P :P :P :P :P :P

You are on dangerous ground when you put yourownself up as a scholar of languages.
The context of the subject is tanamount to knowing how a word should be translated.
Love is a good example.
Back off the languages for you know little of translation.

Not exactly.  I'm non-religious and still don't support abortion.  Whether people have a "soul" or not, life is a scientific phenomenon, not a religious one.  I find conception to be the most clear-cut and non-ambiguous marker at which to determine when life begins - again, from a scientific standpoint.

I will concede that there is merit in the second half of your statement, but then again whether or not you value life is also pretty indifferent from religion.  As a matter of fact so many people have been killed "in the name of God" and so many horrendous acts committed that from my perspective religion often does a lot to REDUCE one's value of life, not the other way around.

That may be as good as we can come up with . But what does it have to do with freedom ?

As for religion reducing ones value of life you may have a point - since so many corrupt the word of God and do bad things in his name. It would be bad to confuse this with true love and obeying Gods word. If you believe in a scientific base for life I see no reason to dispute that but would add  something caused all scientific phenomenon to happen . What can we attribute the begining to ? Not just man but of it all ? Some call it energy , some matter/anti matter and a host of other ideas and names. Some of us call it God and the fact is no one can dispute the existance of God and prove it. If there were no God would there be right and wrong ? good or bad ? Would we not be like other creatures and only exist to survive  ? God gives us hope .

the fact is no one can dispute the existance of God and prove it.

A valid point, but let me propose an equally valid point.

Lets say that I declare that the universe was created from a primordial pasta by a Flying Spaghetti Monster (praise be to his noodly appendage!).

Can you prove this to be untrue?  The answer of course, is no.  Without being tainted by previous indoctrination though, you can instantly see the incredulity in believing such a farce.  The simple fact that an idea cannot be proven false does not warrant belief in it - if that were the case there are a whole host of other competing religions that also can't be proven false.  Can you prove that Zeus doesn't exist?  Ra?  Odin?  Shiva? Yu-huang? No, those deities cannot be proven false either, yet you (nor I) believe in them.

As the saying goes - whatever your religious beliefs, there is a whole slew of gods that you do not believe in.  Atheists merely disbelieve in one more.

Quote
If there were no God would there be right and wrong ? good or bad ? Would we not be like other creatures and only exist to survive  ? God gives us hope .

There is no right and wrong from a moral standpoint, but there is from an ethical standpoint.  Morals are religiously based.  Ethics are not (feel free to Google for the difference, or if you have a local community college or the like I'd STRONGLY advise taking a good Philosophy class).  This is quite evident by the fact that there are NUMEROUS atheists in the world who are no less ethical then their religious counterparts.  "Irreligion" has currently moved up to 16% of the population of the country at this point - up from 8% in 1990.  That - not Christianity, not Islam, not Judiaism - is the largest growing segment of this distribution.  That sector of people are not evil.  Most are fine citizens - certainly no worse than an equivalent sampling of religious folks.

As to your 2nd question, yes I do tend to consider myself atheist.  I just often tend to avoid spelling it out as the word itself often ignites flurries of fanaticism.  All too often the mere fact that people have awoken from believing in the stories is too much for many to bear, and so instead of accepting your complete disbelief they declare you to be "working for the devil" or some other such nonsense.  MOST atheists don't even care that much.  I myself didn't get involved in this thread until it was implied that to value life one must believe in God, which is a notion that I personally find to be offensive.

For the most part though, when you look at which side doing the shouting and most of the attempts at converting, you'll find us much more lax.  This ONE billboard has ignited a controversy.  Remember - we're up to over an eighth of the population.  How many Church sponsored pro-Christian billboards do you think exist per one billboard like this?  I'd wager that it's a LOT more than a 1:8 ratio - and the VAST majority on this side - so long they're privately financed, don't care.  In the other camp, there are those like Matt who do seem to respect that others may have differing opinions, and then there are those like powder who see it as something to be stamped out.  We're not the aggressors here.

If I had not had prayers ansewered I would be better able to accept your ideas. Truth is I have and believe in God because of it . I don't mean that i prayed for a new bike and one showed up . But ask for direction in some very demanding times and was lead thru. with the worry gone.
I have said this before , anyone who consideres themself an aetheist should one time in their life ask God to prove to them he exist. If they do so with an open heart and mean it they may get a suprise. They can't talk religion only God and they must open their mind to things they can't always touch or see but feel. God is like love you feel it .
as for your good/bad idea . Its like CCW there are still enough belivers to keep the rest honest  ;)
It appears nither of us will change our minds here today so lets change the subject and reflect to ourselves lest others will call us a fanatic as someone posted earlier

Why is it when a Christian is offended by something and speaks out the first amendment is mentioned, but when someone complains about Christianity or a Christian symbol offending them it has to be stopped or removed.
In Pennsylvania, a public school set up what they believed would be a completely non-offensive seasonal scene that included a Nativity scene, a menorah, and a Kwanza scene—to respect everyone's beliefs. The school principal ordered the manger scene removed but allowed the other items to remain. Why is it that only Christianity, is deemed to be an offensive religion. While all others can do what ever they want and nothing is said. If the billboard said something like “give your life to Christ and live for eternity” how long do you really think it would stand?
What about Christmas? Anymore Christ is replaced by the fat guy in a red suit. The term Merry Christmas is being done away with, and terms like Happy Holidays, and Sparkle season are taking it place. Ever notice how hard it is anymore to find Christmas cards that actually say Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas is not used by many merchants for fear of offending someone, but it is the very celebration of Christ’s birth that they are making money on.  Many want to make Jesus a myth just like their santa.
The same people that mention the first amendment when it comes to pornography or something offensive to a Christian, are silent when it comes to your or my child being able to carry a Bible to school. Or say a silent prayer in school, or wear a tee shirt that says Jesus saves. We even have some public schools that pass out Koran’s to students for class. It is being forced on students to read it by calling it a text book, explaining the cultural distinctions of Islam. Bring a Bible to school, forget it. That is to offensive to some. It is more acceptable to carry a playboy to school than a Bible.
Christ is slowing being removed from society. It started shortly after the United Nations was formed. Its also when we had several Supreme Court decisions in 1947 and 48 that began the attack on Christianity.
Was this nation not built on the principles that freedom, liberty and human rights are an inherent gift from God? Now we are banning the Lord of Hosts from all public places because the master utopia planners know that a one world religion can not be formed as long as Biblical Christianity exists in any form. Once God is successfully erased from America those inherent God given rights given to all Americans by the Constitution will become conditional rights that may or may not be granted, by the utopians of the new world order. Personal liberty of the majority will not be protected in this new society, but rather the special rights of an elitist minority.
The globalists know that world government could never be achieved as long as nationalism remained part of the bedrock of American belief. And, they were convinced that as long as God remained part of the character molding of children, patriotism and nationalism could never be shattered. Jesus does have to be reduced to a myth for this to happen, and its exactly what the billboard is implying. I agree totally that the billboard should be legal. It’s the atheists right, but its also the right of Christians to put up whatever signs they want to. Anymore that is not the case. The ACLU and other human rights groups are playing a major role in the purge of the Christian God.

I like the concept of what the ACLU is suppose to be. The fact is they do not live up to the concept. They have no effort to protect our 2nd amendment. They have become an organization hell bent on a radical left wing agenda.

DDZ. All true, and an excellent post. You asked why Christianity is singled out to be suppressed??? Easy answer. Satan is alive and well and Christians and Jews are the only religions that can cost him souls, he already has the rest of  them. It always has been, and will be until the end of time, as we know it.
In reading some Jewish history, Isaiah was sawn completely in half at the waist with a two man saw because they were offended at his prophesy.   All the time urgeing him to deny that his words came from God, but he would not comply to them.  His prophesies speak for themselves.
The Bible calls people like him a 'pecular people'.

SHOOTALL. Good post. 7 years ago I had a heart attack and open heart surgery, 5 bypasses. Going into surgery didn't bother me in the least, til the next morning. Surgery was scheduled for 11 am, but the doc moved it up to 7 am, and that bothered me, a lot. The doc saw me early that morning and was all smiles as he said he moved it up and hoped it was ok with me. I said, this takes about 4 hours doesn't it??? Doc said, yes, give or take a bit why,  I said, my church will be praying for me at 11 am, by then I'll either be in recovery or the morgue. He smiled and said, we'll try not to let that happen, I actually went into surgery scared. As long as  I knew folks at church would pray for me I wasn't worried one bit. When I woke up in recovery my first feeling was joy, I had made it. my second was shame for doubting. As it turned out, after surgery they gave me a shot of blood thinner that stopped my heart cold. I was technically dead for several minutes, they were just about to stop trying to revive me when my heart started beating on it's own. My point??? God knew what he was doing, those prayers were right on time. YES, I believe in prayer. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hey powderman, that could have been my story too.  My heart went into an arithimic something or other on Saturday.  Just fluttering, not beating.  By Sunday A.M. still no change.  The Doc wanted to shock my heart as soon as he could get to me.  I also was scared.  At precisely 11:00 A.M.  the intensive care nurse opened my room's door and said, " Your heart beat is normal".   Later; my Pastor entered the room and said " Larry,  this morning at 11:00 A.M., all the men of the Church gathered together and prayed for you .

Coincidence ?  Not at all.

I always wonder when Folks say "In my opinion". Are they insecure or what, since it is so obvious who's opinion it is!

Seems to be a lot of rock chunkin by some who must certainly be without sin!  Go and Sin no more!

Aetheist all harp on what has been done in the name of religion. History is frank much bad has been done for sure. Some by the church, some by others using the church as an excuse. These things are both fact and true . I mention no certian church as most fall into this truth. The thing I notice about most aetheist is they fail to forgive. They always point out history , most before the USA was started (but not all) . They can't see that man taints religion not God. They seem to fight the concept of God by stating the short commings of man. If they were brave and willing to ask in complete sincerity ( no pre concived doubt) they would find there is a God . If not they will continue to blame God for mans faults. As example man has tried to explain how the earth and man came to be. This goes back over 2000 years. Today we know more than then . Man fights over how it was explained so long ago vs. what we know. I ask could God have caused what we know now to take place ? Could man in his normal need to come up with a story used what he knew at the time to explain ? Why can't we put aside the fighting and seek the truth with Gods leadership ? Three types of people read the Bible - those looking for faults , those looking for loop holes and those looking for salvation and guidence.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

this is why i don t argue religion.. in my case,, i found my foundation on my knees ,going to the only real source of truth..i don t claim to know the mind of the creator..his will be done..
i do believe if you go to him in humbleness, with real intent ..he will claim you as his own..then you just grow at what ever pace you can handle..he deals with us all differently ,i suspect though..he knows us better than we know ourselves.may he bless us all.slim

Out of all the Christian denominations there are only TWO types of churches. The first and most popular is a meeting place for the saints. The second is a hospitol for sinners. Go for the right reason. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
