Dougk,

IMO, a double rifle has two barrels side by side. Shotguns do too. I like the balance & sight plane.

I think technically, they are very similar, but i do like the fact that you don't have to open an S&S as far to reload.  I have both and i like the feel of the S&S MUCH better,

Especially in a shotgun.  I've been shooting this Remington since i was a kid, as dad bought it "used" in the 40's, for ten dollars.

When i was a kid, i kept a Savage "four tenner" in the right bbl. to shoot "sitting" game with, (i still have it) keeping the left bbl for "flying" game.  lol

As an adult, i purchased a Krieghoff "long", 22WMR insert bbl for the right bbl., and used this shotgun as a combo gun for small game.

  Anyway, make mine a S&S.   8)

DrillingMan,
that is a great point.  For field use I find the SxS shotgun feels much better and has a better balance.

I dont own a SxS DR but I would expect the same to be true for double rifles.  The only other thing that I can think of is the O/U vs SXS ease of regulation.  The Valmet Double rifles are adjustable so i would think most O/U DRs are adjustable.   Having said that if I had the $$$ I would buy a SxS over a O/U.

Most O/U DR's are NOT adjustable, and there are a "few" S&S's that are.

Buy a S&S in the proper cartridge for what you hunt, and it will regulated with the proper bullet/load for the game animal you hunt already.  There's really no need for adjustable regulation then.

There's also some "regulation" through handloading too.

Dougk,

You do have the $$$. Just sell off your Valmets and use the money to buy your double rifle. Honestly I usually sell a few to get something new. I generally regard my gun collection as my savings account. When I want or need something I just make a few withdrawals (sell a few).

If I didn't thin the herd from time to time there would be no place to put them.  :o

Dougk,

Once you get a sxs double you won't use the o/u anymore. Why keep them.

That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

That's the only way i could do it...  Sell enough "stuff" until i had the $$.

Regards,

One thing I like about the OU DR is the ability to have the top barrel zeroed at 100 yards and the bottom barrel 1.5 inches high for those longer shots

What's that, a few inches difference at 200???  Wouldn't it be smarter to regulate the bbls "properly", so if needed, you would have a "properly regulated" faster second shot, then put both bbls a couple inches high with the scope, and aim "dead on" all the way out?  Works for me...

On an O/U:  One shot over the other on the target, the distance apart the "bbls are apart", at what ever distance you regulate it for.

I'm betting you can buy a pretty good DR for what the divorce is going to cost you!  lol

Yes, and then she will be selling your guns anyway. So you should just sell em yourself. Cheeper all the way around.

I used to own two O/U double rifles, both in 30 06. Practiced with them more than a few times but could never get used to reloading them fast. SxS's seem easier in this reguard as it was easier for me to keep two rounds in my hand and reload on a horizontal plane rather than vertical. But, different strokes for different folks.
The most important issue would most likely be to stick with either style rifle so loading and reloading becomes second nature.
