Savage Scout in 7.62x39mm
« on: November 30, 2010, 07:51:25 AM »
I was looking over their website and found this.....

http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/10FCM+SCOUT

I had no idea it was available in 7.62x39mm.  Has anyone seen one or bought one?  Are they even available yet?

I guess no one knows or has ordered.  Perhaps they know something over at Savageshooters.com.

Now that is something that I want.  I may even sellmy CZ527 Carbine in 7.62x39 to get one.  I really like the gun, but hate the way the magazine interferes with carrying it, and the reverse-operating safety.  I am also a fan of the scout rifle.

Looks sweet for sure but a little too pricey for my taste.  Wonder what the bore diameter is...308 or 311.

I did a little looking and they also offer that caliber in the 11FCNS.  http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/11FCNS

I had to dig on their website a bit.  If you search by caliber the 7.62x39 its not on the list.  Plus it retails for $675 instead of $814 for the Scout which ought to work out to $550 or less in the real world (your mileage may vary).  This could very well be my next purchase, if it is really available.  Personally, I would rather have the shorter barrel of the Scout on the 11 FCNS platform, but could live with the 22inch.  Cutting a barrel back is not big deal for gunsmith anyway.  With the Accu-trigger and Accu-stock this could well be the most accurate platform avaliable for 7.62x39.

Wow, check this out!  5.45x39mm and 5.7x28mm.  Now that is different.  Not what I'm looking for, but where else can you get one besides military rifles.

I wonder if they'll make the scout, or the longer gun for lefties?  My youngest could enjoy the 7.62x39 if they made one left handed. I'd take the scout stuff off and do a conventional scope mount. That could be a real fun gun.

Took a little time to look over the current Savage bolt line. I'm dizzy from the choices! Didn't know they'd abandoned the Edge name for Axis already! Looks like they have a gun for almost everyone!.

If they offered it in Edge/Axis they couldn't make them fast enough!

yeah snap they do but the mini 30 doesn't have the accuracy reputation of the inexpensive Savage bolt guns.  And the bolt guns don't fling cases hither and yon.  Depends on what one likes to do with their 7.63x39.

You would be better off with a SKS or a Saiga than the Mini 30.  I had one and it patterned rather than grouped.  While both my SKS and Saiga are good accurate guns they too scatter empties all over the place.  I reload and that is why I want a bolt or break open gun.  If you shoot steel case ammo then the autos may be the way to go.  They do tend to burn up a lot of ammo though :) and the days of $40 for 500 unfortunately are gone.

I have a H&R  handi rifle in 7.62x39.  being a single shot, hinge style its pretty darn consistent.  I got it for a SHTF piece, but to my disappointment she won't shoot mill surp ammo.  The berdan primer is slightly inset and it only gets light strikes.  Now she does real good on white box Remington.  I wonder if these rifles will have a similar situation. or if someone else with a 39 in a diff rifle could fill me in.   Thanks a lot guys
