My hands are worn out
« on: November 30, 2010, 08:52:01 AM »
At age 64, my hands are about shot.  Just about cut off my left index finger this summer with a power saw.  The doctor saved it but it doesn't have any feeling or strength.  It will type.  On my right hand I have arthritis in the knuckles of the middle finger and forth finger, and a knot in the palm of that hand.  Getting harder and harder to do fine work.  Even picking up a coin is no longer easy.  I wake up in the middle of the night and both hands are often numb.  Is this just part of growing old!  Is anyone else finding that their joints and fingers are growing stiff with age?

I was prescribed a cream called voltaren.  rub it on those painful knuckles and the pain is gone.
It would be hard to function without it.

CHARLES P. I've found that a 250 mg capsule of time released NIACIN helps keep my hands and fingers from going numb, they still do some, but not nearly as bad.  Prayer sent for you. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

Talk to your doc about a suppliment "glucosamine/condroitin"  It may help given 1-3 months of use.

It can take a bit longer for some people.
I noticed a difference in about 3-4 weeks.

Even though it's a supplement I'd still ask the doc about dosage.
The only negative that I've heard, there may be other negatives, is that it can effect uptake
of other meds if it is taken at the same time as those meds.

My left hand mid knuckle has been swollen and sore for two weeks.  Now my right hand is too.  Could it be from prescribed meds for other ailments?????

I have arthritis in both hips and hands. I have taken Glucosamine Chondroitin for years. It does help some. On my last visit to the Doctor he told me recent studies have shown that vitamin D works wonders. I take a 1000iu or what ever it is once a day.
It took about 2 weeks for it to kick in but now i can get around in the house without my cane. Give it a try and see if it works for you.

There are times my fingers/hands go numb. I think it's carpo tunnel for me. Been welding and grinding for 15+ years, plus hanging on to a Harley for 30 years of riding. When I am in the habit, I would take the Glucosamine Chondroitin and it seemed to help. My hips and knees are bothering me more now than ever. My problem is, I have a few days where I feel pretty good, and I'll get out of the habit of taking it. Then I'll have days were I push it,like today, gonna fire up the log splitter, and everything is back to hurting. Gonna take some right now, before I even get started. gypsyman

GYPSYMAN. If I forget to take it, or run out for a few days I really feel it and it takes several days of taking it to make up for it. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I had a chiropractor tell me to take glucosamine sulfate and not glucosamine HCL. He said the human body is unable to absorb the glucosamine HCL. Dont know- I have taken both and see no difference. Anyone else ever hear this?

I just saw something yesterday that said too much vitamin D can affect uptake of certain prescrption meds.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Hi Guys- Your Glucosomine chondroitin (Sorry about the spelling) Check the labels to see if it contains "MSM" it is a derivative (SP.) of sulpher and no it has no odor or taste, but it helps = the water pressure in the cells in the joints where it is causing the swelling / stiffness/ pain. I take a product called BLM and it contains Glucosomine and MSM and a bunch of other things but it does make a difference for me, but it takes a couple weeks. But if you forget it for a day or two it is still working, but forget it for a week and you know it. Another product that has 3x the MSM is called Sulferzyme. Do a little online research about MSM. I read an actual book that was all about it, the author had many good benefits listed.  take care, thejanitor

FOURBEE. The vinegar I take  I buy at Kroger. Raw, UNFILTERED, apple cider vinegar, dark of course. Another heart patient told me that his doc reccomended this particular vinegar, brand doesn't matter but it should be the raw unfiltered variety. The brand I got from Kroger is, BRAGG. I give the btl a shake and pour a tbs or so in a glass with enough water to make it palatable then gulp it down all at once, I never measure, just pour. My biggest problem is remembering to take it. Grandma never had any allergies. The honey she took was from local hives. Honey from local hives is supposed to be the best for allergies  because the bees polinated the same weeds and such as you are around every day. No beekeepers around here anymore. Not really, I add maybe 1/2- 3/4 inch of water, then just chug it on down, it's not like you let it linger in your mouth like a drink of something. Charlie.  ;D ;D

Don't know why I have so many joint problems.  I have had one rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder and two on my left.  All three times the suprasponadour tendon (sp) was completely worn in to and had to be reattached.  Man that is a painful operation.  Had a trigger finger operation on my right hand.  Needed one on the left hand but all of a sudden it healed itself.  Over 40 years ago I was sharpening a Bear Razor Point broadhead with a small file and stuck the tip of the arrow into the knuckle of my middle finger.  It has hurt nearly every day since then, and that was 44 years ago.  It stays swollen and it buises whenever I skin a deer or work with a handsaw or hammer.  Had shots in both knees.  The drug was made from the combs of roosters.  Results vs. the plecebo are 50/50.  Worked for me, and insurance paid for it.  Think it was called Synthest or something like that.  Got spinal stenosis in my neck and back.  Admin law judge awarded me permanent disability.

Did I say I had a mean wife too?  Ain't it tough to grow old!

Fresh mixed daily honey, vinegar and water is good for gouth and arthritis. Daily Alfalfa tablets are good for arthritis also. It takes them about six months to begin working but after that when you feel better and quit hurting and forget to take them then and start hurting again it only takes a week or so for them to take effect. Vitamin C helps prevent sore arthritis when doing exercise/work. Don't remember the rates on the Vinegar, honey, water, but I use 1 Tbl honey, 1 Tbl Vinegar in 8-10 oz of water, fresh each morning.
