it chambered.....who else has tried it and dropped the hammer?
« on: November 30, 2010, 01:12:12 PM »
buffalo classic carbine......45 long colt
model....cr45lc

454 casull  chambers  fine
i have heard  of them being  reamed to 460 smith mag
so this is probly a stupid question

i  would not ream to 460 mag...since i have  five 45-70s...not worth the effort
but  a 454 casull.....with out any modifications or effort  is inviting
and still  shoot the  mild 45 lc...they are very quiet

and there  is that  old  rule....
''never chamber a round  not stamped on the barrel''

has   any one  tried this  and  what  kind of  results?
454  is seldom  discussed as a rifle round
but it  seems like it would be like a mild 45-70...and we  like those

your play'n with matches and gasoline !!!!!!
the 45/70 chamber pressure is around 28k.... the casull is 30k+ more than that....
the sb2 should handle that,  too close to the lands will cause excessive pressures !!!
be careful.  and i'm not telling you to pull the trigger either !!!!
please be careful the 45 colt ruger loads are around 25k......

It may chamber brass, but not a live round, I'd do a chamber cast first if it will fully chamber a live round before I shot it.

I just reamed my .45 Colt chamber to .454 Casull.  The chamber was long already.  The Casull cartridge came very close to chambering before I started.  Lot's of people on here have done this so no issues safety wise.

you said the majic words..."you reamed"..... thats different.
my safety words were for chambering a casull in a colt chamber.
and yes... i am one of the guys that has reamed the colt to casull and another to .460.

I'm kind of a Yankee Dumbass, but I would'nt try anything like that til I ran a .454 reamer into it.

Just for a FYI question.
What if a loaded 454 round would chamber and not be touching the rifleing?
Wouldn't that be the same as a 45 reamed to 454?

That's just it, " fitting" in the chamber and safely being able to be fired are two entirely different things!

Please do not fire it! It's likely simply a long, Long colt chamber.  Make a chamber cast and measure that. Then make an educated decision if it's safe to fire.
Don't get me wrong, I have a 45 Colt H&R rechambered to 454. The SB2 receiver and CR barrel is plenty strong. But if that chamber is cut wrong very dangerous pressure will be exerted on it. Pressures that could easily destroy you and the gun. Step back and think on this. Please be safe!!

Mine has not been rechambered and I was able to chamber a few Casull rounds that I had left from my Encore . I did not do a chamber cast but when I was mocking up a 45 Colt round that I wanted to try that was (nearly) identical buy the time I got it and my load fit it was about a thousand and a half shorter than the casull. Still thumpin a 360 gr cast bullet right a 1500fps though. No I did not shoot the Casull round . If you take and dump all that powder out on a piece of paper you can clearly see that it contains plenty of powder to blow up almost any frame that it don't chamber right in. ;) Kurt

a question guys, I see the possibility of higher pressures here and the concern for safety, but what about those of us here that have chambered and fired .360 DW's in thier stock unreamed .357 Mag barrels? Should they (we) stop doing so?....<><....:)

Andy, In the case of the 360, we are talking same pressures. Possible problems could exist, but the chances are much reduced as the  cartridages are very close.
In the case of the Cassul it's not even in the same ball park. Below fifteen K compared to almost sixty K.

that was my thought when  i made the post

i did consider  the pressure spike due to limited bullet jump
don't handi 45-70 chambers have the rifleing too far back
i  know  low preasure.....but   they are still still  hot rotted  over  a marlin  max load

for  those that rechabered or have 454 rifle
HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM?

[and for those that might think this an  irresponcible  post......
i  did too  but  figured a discussion  would be good  for  all here]

looks  like a chamber cast is in order.....ok  how do i do that?

We are talking single shots here, where no crimp is needed, so seating the bullet a tad deeper into the case to get a little 'freebore' (to drop pressures) is OK, AS LONG AS you realize that deeper in also increases the pressure of the cartridge firing. This requires reducing the charge a bit.
I would not shoot a FACTORY .454 on an SB-1 frame, even if it fit the barrel chamber.
I would, on an SB-2, reload to about half way between a .45Colt and .454 and see if I cared for the recoil.
If the chamber is long enough to hold that brass you might see an increase in accuracy by using it at .45Colt levels.
So many trials, so little time..........

i  just have a full box of 454 casull bullets....factory...corbon 260]

the loaded rounds fit  fine

NO 45 colt or casull RELOADING STUFF

other than  a chamber/throat cast...
i considered   useing  the kinetic bullet puller
partially pulling the slug  and rechambering.....then measure the difference

Hear is my story, year and a half ago. New 45 BC, and had a couple of factory 454s I bummed. Fit right in. Cool. Being new to all this I asked some advice and studied. The consciences was don't do it. I didn't believe. So a bought a bag of new 454 starline brass. Just for safety I chambered one,  the new brass, did not seat, could not close, and when forced the new brass stuck in the chamber. After ramming the brass out and examining it, I found the throat had been forced into the forcing cone. Conclusion, a factory or reloaded, crimped round fit right in but the brass was laying on the forcing cone. A recipe for disaster. Same as having a barrel obstruction. Solution, trimmed the brass 1 or 2 thousandth off the brass and shot 454c loads. Worked fine. I don't do that anymore, the bruises got to be to much. As said before, my 45LC now sits on topper wood and frame and I have fired hundreds of "Ruger" level loads, deadly, no need or desire for them big bangers.

That is along the lines of what i was thinking: was in a hurry to try out a new .270 once and loaded up a few rounds at starting levels without trimming cases. Crimped with Lee factory crimp die cause there was no cannelure. Loaded cartridges dropped right in but started poping the action open and expelling primers when you shoot it. Neck was too long, crimped it fit into the throat but when firing, it was a tight pinch pushing the bullet past the neck which overlapped it in the throat spiking pressure on what was otherwise minimal loads. Just because it fits with the bullet crimped in place doesn't mean it fits when the bullet leaves.

That said, i'm of the opinion that unless you're shooting in the upper range of .454 performance where the use of small rifle primers makes some difference to case life and you don't want to shoot .460, there's little reason not to stay with the .45 Colt...unless you just shoot factory loads.
All that's gold does not glitter. Not all those who wander are lost.

This underscores that factory brass is just a starter kit.......you MUST check the case length and prep the brass before loading.
This assumes the chamber is done correctly, but at the very least you did your part in making proper loads.
